The political controversy surrounding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and allegations raised by opposition parties is intensifying ahead of the proposed October 2 protests.
Opposition leaders and civil society groups have called for demonstrations over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission. As of October 1, Delhi Police had not granted permission for the proposed protest at Jantar Mantar. Meanwhile, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced an October 2 “Jail Bharo Andolan” in Mumbai and reiterated demands including Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, a freeze on SIR and changes to the 2023 law governing appointments to the Election Commission.
In Karnataka, D.K. Shivakumar also protested over alleged misuse of Form 7 applications and sought an investigation into claims of large-scale voter deletion attempts. These remain political allegations and demands; the Election Commission has defended its processes and disputed allegations of wrongdoing.
Will the October 2 protests turn into a wider political campaign targeting Gyanesh Kumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah? What could happen at Jantar Mantar, and what are the major demands of the protesters?
