It's not possible to expose re-selling so heavily on social media and see it not have an impact. Some negatives and some positives.
The most common negative I come across is that you tube re-sellers give too much info on what sells well. But I like to think I'd have learned that myself simply by doing research on eBay.
Personally my biggest gripe with you tube re-sellers is that they often make re-selling seem so much fun, so easy, so profitable ,,,,,,, When the reality is different.
My wife and I average 1k a week in sales exclusively on eBay and I can promise you we work very hard to maintain that and deal with all the issues that pop up on eBay.

Jesus, those hands just don’t stop moving… jazz hands aside, it’s an interesting watch, good post

Good point about reselling being more accessible. Stuffs not even turning up to charity shops or car boots because people are selling it themselves rather than donating.

Ricky you would be the best teacher. This is superb. Funny, engaging, intelligent and really well researched.
I do wish you had made the connection between highly paid CEOs and the enormity of taking responsibility for such large organisations. The only people who will do that for significantly less are likely to lack experience and knowledge and wouldn’t be able to cope.

This is the most balanced commentary on this subject that I've come across. Thank you

Great video! American reseller here since 2008. Resellers and YouTube is the thing that has given the Ki-bosh to the market here. Everyone flooded Goodwill and other thrift shops to buy stuff to resell on Ebay, Poshmark, Vinted, Depop and Mercari. And so many made video's about it. It became a business real fast! Also, the hispanic population always bought a lot of stuff to send back to Mexico (I live in the southwest states) from Goodwill when it was cheap, but it got so crowded in all the shops that you could barely find anything good to sell. If you did find something, it was selling for the price that you yourself would be asking online!! Goodwill (in USA) started pricing their stuff higher, AND also pulling their better items and designer items to sell on their own website. Even local thrift shops raised their prices. Then of course the GenZ, Millenial, and "retro vintage" craze became the trend. I got pushed out AND priced out of the market and quit it in 2019. Now, in 2026, I've dabbled a bit with my own personal items, mostly on Vinted....but I hate them and have nothing good to say about Vinted's admins. Just like everything that starts out good, the bigger they get the worse it gets for both buyer and seller (usually sellers).

I feel like Charity shop prices are going up because a lot of people are putting their own items on vented as it’s so accessible for everyone rather than donating.

Theres a couple of charity shops in my area , everything £5 and under, super busy , new stock everyday. The other 3 million shops - very expensive same stock for weeeeeks at a time, nobody hardly ever in them.

But i blame government for everything,  usually leads back to them in some way

in my 20 plus years of selling it's definitely becoming harder but it's always evolving, its the nature of the business. i think eBay's constant flip flopping between the next "big things" is definitely not helping - eBay Live is such a silly thing to back so hard, the majority of users do not have the confidence to do these live shows. i think some YouTubers need to be a lot more responsible when it comes to content too, yes its an unskilled job but the amount of Youtubers stating its and easy way to make a living need to give their head a wobble. there is a heck of a lot that goes into reselling in the background. its far from easy and take quite a lot of discipline. its probably why when times get hard newer resellers start blaming the system they are in.

Unfortunately some charity shops just go by highest on sale via eBay, they never do solds. One of the charity shops I go into is so overpriced, the clothing and shoes/trainers are filthy but ask for top price.  Another charity shop of the same name is very good on pricing. As you said the charity shops don't have the exposure that eBayers or Vinters have when selling

I was working in bhf in 2016 and we were told to compare prices on eBay and to sell £1-2 cheaper then sold items . This is why Iv avoided that specific shop for years now no bargains to be had

I guess you could say the staff watched YouTubers become younger, savvy, tech-related, and priced things up behind the scenes.

Cost of living crisis is the main driver, people wanting to rid of items are looking for cash rather than donate, more sellers for various reason, means more competition and to stay competitive you need to be knowledgeable, for hard pressed  buyer's.

As someone whos been reselling years way before the whole reseller  you tube thing
I wish eBay would just scrap the solds  people need to learn the hard way like I did 😂
Vinted is good for that ❤

Reselling has quadrupled in the last two yes just two seasons . Everyone turns up to the markets wanting designer goods etc top end bits at no money then they take it and put it on eBay . I myself have been selling at markets twenty years and I’ve watched the trends . Just last week I saw a young lad of about 10 yrs holding a Pokemon card up to his dad and I heard him say I will get good money for this card ….. he was 10 years old …….. has YouTube etc caused this ? Mmmm like you said not sure but I think it must of . I now as a seller put all my stuff on eBay make much more money still do the markets and give the resellers a bit of an earner . Great content

Great video! Completely agree. Ultimately for charity shops to compete and get people in the shops it needs to be priced appropriately. You can’t expect the same value as online. I don’t have to go anywhere to buy online it’s shipped straight to me I can do that whenever I want. But charity shops need footfall.
Also I absolutely bet that resellers account so so much profit achieved in charity shops. I don’t go in and buy 1\2 items I buy lots and spend literally thousands of pounds a year.

Bravo, brilliant summary and analysis and really interesting video, thank you.

Hi Ricky.  There was nothing better then going into a smelly charity shop full of bargains. 😊

Thanks mate. Have a great weekend
