Hunting markhor is hard. Success depends on the physical condition of the hunter, because the hunt takes place between 800 and 3000 m above sea level. The terrain the markhor lives in is extremely difficult. Today the Tajik population holds many trophy males aged seven years and older. The annual harvest quota for this species is 12 to 15 animals a year. A licence costs serious money, and the lion's share of it goes to protecting the population.
