What will change our future? Artificial man
Robotics is the endeavor to build machines that simulate human physical activity. Like Daedalus, who created bird wings to fly, or Homer, who imagined the lame Vulcan in his forge, leaning on self-propelled maids, all the way to Fritz Lang's film Metropolis and assembly-line robots. The complementary endeavor to robotics is artificial intelligence, which aims to simulate human intellectual activity. Here, too, the mythology is ancient: from the chess-playing machines of the eighteenth century to the HAL computer in Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, robotics and artificial intelligence converge in Philip Dick's novel, which was adapted into the film Blade Runner. The androids of fantasy are now indistinguishable from humans, both physically and intellectually, but what are the true limits and potential of artificial humans?
