horrible that the mother of joy still refused to take her home, instead she sues. she should sue yes, but she should have taken her daughter away from all that horror.

Thank you for giving respect to the former residents of this place. As a mom of 2 born in the mid to late 1980s and with special needs, this video is why mine have remained home under my care. I will care for them until I draw my last breath.

My uncle was born in the 1950’s and was deemed mentally disabled. My grandmother raised him as a normal child and fought for his rights up to his passing from cancer in 2018. He was always happy. I love my grandmother so much for being a fighter for him. I now have a 6 year old with autism and would do anything for him. I couldn’t imagine putting him through that hell 🥺 God sees all. Those who treated those children poorly will get their punishment in the afterlife.

These despicable so called health care workers should be in prison for what they did to the poor helpless patients!

My dads cousin was born 1938 with cerebral palsey. The Drs tried to get my aunt to put him away in an institution as he wouldnt be able to learn anything. My aunt took care of him all her life and when she passed another aunt and uncle the same age as he was took him in until neither could physically care for him. He lived to be vlose to 80 years old and had an 8th great education. He also had a 4 wheeler ATV that he rode all over the place and would sneak and drink beer with my daddy. also played guitar all his life. Not a bad life for a worthless retard as people referred to him. We all loved him very much and he was spoiled rotten by the whole family.

The dentist primarily was there to pull teeth. Any patient who bit anyone would have all their teeth pulled out. And from then on ate baby food. Mush. This was horrible.

My daughter has autism. Watching this makes me so thankful I’m able to care for her at home. No one else would protect her like I can.

Absolutely disgusting that the state would allow 20 absolutely normal children to be placed in here just because they didnt get adopted in a certain amounr of time!!!! Another bit of proof the state does NOT do whats in the best interest of any child!!!

My grandfather had my grandmother committed b/c of "irrational behavior" (menopause). They gave her a hysterectomy and pulled out her teeth. She eventually was rescued by my father and she outlived the SOB. Trenton, N.J.

The cruelty by those who believe themselves to be superior. Asylums are such sad places.

I hate to be judgmental I've never been in this situation but that mother of Joy made me very sick at my stomach, even God tells her to take that daughter out there do it herself and what does she do, use her daughter for a meal ticket and try to sue the government for money and leave the daughter in the hell hole! I don't even know how she can tell that story without being ashamed! I feel so sad for all of these children without a voice.

The way children are called “inmates” in the newspaper article 16:12 …chilling

As someone who has been in a modern mental hospital, I can't imagine how awful it must've been to get put in there, it's both heartbreaking and interesting to me, because it's a part of history

If only these places remained committed to their original mission, not overcrowded, not understaffed with unqualified staff. G o o d asylums need to be reopened. There are so many people with mental health problems left to struggle alone or stuck in prisons unsuitable for their needs.

@lilliana7942 1 year ago

But she didn’t take joy home regardless of knowing she was being abused amongst everything she saw there? What the….

@RollinInTheD 3 years ago

This is probably worst than prison. I'm sick to my stomach.

What a horrible mother. She knew what was going on and still left her daughter there

It is so sad that the intellectual disabled was kept away from society. I remember people saying that if a child had learing problems and autism belong in instution. I remember i was consided to be mentally retarded because i was not speaking at age ffive. My parents refuse to put me in a state school and put me in special education classes. The education was not prepared to to educate children with learning disabilities in the 70s. I did not learn to read until 7th grade because no thought of teaching me how read one on one until then. When i got to college i became able to finally get A in most of my classes. So much for being mentally retarded.

This will get buried but these old Asylums radiate sadness, pain and abandonment- not just the old, empty buildings; but from the people dumped and forgotten
