People dismiss the 38 Super all the time based on anemic factory loadings. If you have a ramped barrel to support the case heads, the 38 Super can be an incredible cartridge. For those of us who don't reload, Wilson Combat, Underwood, and Buffalo bore can provide you with full potential 38 Super.
90 years ago the 38 super was loaded to 1280 to 1300 FPS pmc and federal are loaded to 1100 to 1150 lets test ammo that reflects the original loading It was popular because it went through steel car bodies to some of us it has power controlablity and 3 more rounds
Speaking of loading ammo down I remember I bought some 10 mm Federal ammo it was barely loaded to 40 Smith & Wesson velocity with a lead bullet. These factories just seem to rip you off with some of their ammo loadings. Years ago I got some 38 super ammo it was Winchester silvertip I was shooting at a wooden backstop in a couple of the bullets just stuck in there like a staple.
I've been able to get 115 grain XTPs and HAPs over 1500fps (some to 1550) and 124 grain XTPs and 125 grain HAPs over 1400 fps, some to 1440, using Silhouette or AA#7. The loads are from .4 to .6 grains over listed loads so they are somewhat over pressure, but don't exhibit any pressure signs. I hesitate to go further. I have, but only used 9x23 brass, which can take the pressure
Now you know why I bought the Garmin even tho it was expensive and even tho I have tons of old data using a pro chrony. ... it just makes life sooooo much simpler. No excuses chrono I just bought an RIA Government in 38 super. my load will be a cast and coated 125 grain HG SWC bullet and my target is right around 1300 fps.
Hey Matt interesting comparison. I've shot some of the Underwood 38 Super out of my 1911's and it's definitely hotter than the big name manufacturers but like you said , out of a 1911 still pleasant to shoot. Always nice to see something on the 38 Super! Good video Matt!
I like my 1911 in 38 super. Mine has both a 9mm and 38 super barrel so all I do is quick barrel and mag change and I can shoot either from one gun. All it takes is shooting them side by side and you see the 38 super is much more powerful than 9mm. 38 super is the perfect power factor... high enough speed to expand hollow points every time but mild enough recoil to make it very easy to shoot well. I will also say, the 38 super is capable of even higher velocity without excess pressure with the right powder.
From Sheridan, WY…subscribed and enjoy your content…357 mag is a beast and REM 125 gr JSP is great. Let me know where can I get the hat you’re wearing in the video…gotta represent….đź¤
I think Buffalo Bore has a 124 grain .38 super going over 1400fps. That said, they also have a .357 mag round that yields just shy of 900 ft. lbs., which is nuts. Thx. Do you have to bulge bust your .38 super ammo.
The 38 Super is the real Super. The 357 is basically unbeatable as a man stopper, but if you like auto loaders the 38:Super is excellent. It’s powerful and extremely easy to shoot well. They should just rename it the 9 mm magnum, would sell like hot cakes. Double taps run at like 547 ftlbs, and BB has some fire breathers as well. The 357 BB can get up to 800 ftlbs. Two of my favorite calibers. Thanks for the video.
