Losing hurts. Rejection hurts. And giving something everything you have only to discover that you still weren't good enough can hurt even more.

The strongest revenge isn't confrontation. It isn't arguing, proving your point, or coming back years later to show everyone who doubted you how successful you've become.

According to Alex Hormozi, success is the only revenge.

In this conversation, Alex tells a story from when he was 15. Angry at people who had doubted him, he imagined becoming successful and returning years later to prove them wrong. His mentor challenged that fantasy: if you spend years building your life just so you can return and show someone what you've accomplished, you've also revealed that they occupied your mind the entire time.

The alternative was much more powerful: win so big that eventually you forget they exist.

Don't confront them. Don't build your life around their approval. Don't obsess over making them regret what they said. Put that energy into your own goals until the people who once bothered you become irrelevant to the life you've created. Hormozi describes this as the difference between petty revenge and becoming so successful that comparison eventually happens without your participation.

But the conversation goes deeper than revenge.

Alex explains how pain itself can become fuel. Instead of constantly numbing uncomfortable truths, he argues for identifying exactly what hurts and confronting it directly. Sometimes an insult stays with you because some part of you fears it might be true. Rather than running from that possibility, Hormozi's approach is to look in the mirror and ask the uncomfortable question: “What if they're right?”

The conversation also challenges the pursuit of happiness. Hormozi distinguishes temporary happiness from finding joy and meaning in the process itself. Winning doesn't always create the feeling people imagine it will. He describes some of his greatest enjoyment as happening during the pursuit—the repetitions, preparation, difficult work, and transformation that happen before the outcome arrives.

And during the hardest periods, Alex uses another psychological frame: imagine the person you ultimately want to become and ask what you would have to put that person through to create them.
