In 1863, 19 year old Fanny Kelly was kidnapped by the Lakota. Her wagon trail to Idaho was ambushed, Her people were killed, and she was taken. In order to SURVIVE six months with her captures she had to endure incredible hardships, battles, and even attempts on her life.

The older I get, the more I realize how very recent history like this is. Once, in my youth, it seemed like ancient history. Time is a strange thing.

My many great grandmother was captured by the Delaware and lived with them for 2.5 years until my grandfather found her and bought her back

Lakota elder here, born in 1956. Going to town with grandmother was scary and uncomfortable. The phrase….”better dead than red” was still popular. The worst ethnic massacre was of our Indigenous….100 million gone. Tribes still endear suffering ti this day. Broken treaties and theft of our scared Black Hills. Ours by treaty. These lands hold the blood of my ancestors. We need healing of the Great Sacred Hoop of life. The circle was destroyed. We must mend it. Both sides. Good signs by Creator. My great great grandmother was Lakota Sioux. She was traded for a bag of potatoes to a family who adopted her as a baby as a farm hand. Her parents were starving and had been run out from where they were staying and knew she couldn’t journey much further with them.

Great video. My grandmother who lived with us was born in 1898. Knowing her and Fanny walked this land at the same time just shows this was really not that long ago.

Follow The River is another such book which chronicles the journey of Mary Ingles Draper and her kidnapping, and subsequent escape, by the Shawnee in Virginia. She traveled 1000 miles to get back to her community and family. It's a powerful and harrowing story that's a testament to the strength, courage, and the indomitable will of a young woman to survive.

Well..
I have a friend in Utah.
He told me his family who came to America in 1873 from Denmark could not have survived if it was not for a native american tribe. They were helping them surviving the first winter in Ameica (the new land to them). ❤😊❤

My ancestor was also kidnapped by natives. Hannah Dustin. Quite a story with several statues of her in different states because of her story

That poor little girl that was scalped and killed. How very sad! I mean I know you can defend your home and property, but children should be off limits! No matter who you are!

Describing the Shaw and little scalp with fair hair on the Blackfoot Indian, made me choke up and shed a tear. I say this as a former marine and father of a little fair haired daughter.

I had a great grandma who lived with Indian ways. She could heal anything from plants and could use every part of nature for delicious meals. It was very clear she’d lived with or near Indian tribes but her story died with her as conversations with her led to vague storytelling. Her living children had never learned her past. As a desperate grand daughter, I attempted to write down some of her “medicine” remedies but could not identify all the ingredients. She lived to 106 yrs of age. It was sad to see her experience and wisdom pass.

My great grandmother remembered hiding in the cellar from native Americans, in 1908... She was way out in the country in the middle of nowhere so raiding was still a thing when she was very little.

It's amazing how any ancestors of any nationality ever survived. The constant violence and war and disease and harsh environments. Women were never safe even if they were able to make a home somewhere.
