Popcorn: A Meta Slasher You Never Saw

JoBlo Horror Originals

A clever love letter to the genre in all its many forms, today's film predates Wes Craven’s mid-90s one-two punch of “New Nightmare” and “Scream” as what you might call a “post-modern” horror movie. One that affectionately pays homage to horror cinema and expects its audience to be savvy to what it’s doing. We're diving into the wonderfully colorful world of 1991's Popcorn.

Thankfully my mom rented this and we watched it when I was a kid. So glad that it's starting the get the attention it deserves in the recent years. More people were familiar with the vhs cover than the actual movie when I would bring it up in 90s horror discussions.

Another example that there were great horror movies in the 1990s. That poster was really eye catching.

I remember when I was a little kid, my family had HBO, and Popcorn was on the cover of the little programming guide that they would send you in the mail each month. It really creeped me out, and made me really want to watch it.

"Popcorn, buy a bag, go home in a box". What a great tagline that was. Agreed Villard (RIP) did a bang up job, really talented and if you know, he was in many many movies and tv shows.

this movie needs a remake so bad, in the vibe of "Scream" 😍

I share the sentiment that I wish movies were more of a wall to wall experience. It would be awesome.

Anyone else remember the promos? Usually had a football player (can't tell you who at the time) and a sports announcer would ask them after the end of a game, "Now that you won the Superbowl what are you going to do next?!" Player- "I'm going to see Popcorn!"

I still have this masterpiece in VHS that I bought from the last video store in my town.

I think "The howling" is the only movie where Dee Wallace Stone does not play somebody's mom.

'Scream' owes a LOT to this little underrated classic.

I was beginning to feel like I was the only person who remembers this movie.

Let's not forget "Fade To Black" with Dennis Christopher, another masterpiece. I got to work with Alan Ormsby at our film school where he taught a Horror Screenwriting Class. The product of the class was actually taken and made into a feature. Ormsby ROCKS. I miss hardcore horror movie marathons, love William Castle and am so grateful for this tribute.

This used to be viewable on YouTube , or at least it was a few months ago. Worth a watch for horror fans.

When I was around 8 yrs. the local video store was a short walking distance from my house . I found the poster for this movie in the trash outback . It hung on my wall for a couple years before I ever got a chance to see it and I've loved it ever since.

The vhs box for this haunted me as a child because the woman on the front looked like my aunt. Then I finally saw the movie and adored it. Tom Villard gave a criminally underrated haunting, tragic and dramatic performance. RIP

I remember watching this crazy film a long time ago on VHS and never knew what it was about, till I learned it's about a deranged serial killer picking off teens in a movie theater, in a plot very similar to SCREAM.

I saw Popcorn when it came out back in 91. The Poster itself made me want to see it. It's one of My favorites and I've watched it many times this year alone. On Bloody Disgusting T.V. and Shudder.
