In this video, we explain the story of asteroid Bennu, a carbon-rich near-Earth asteroid that NASA scientists have been studying closely for years.
Bennu was discovered on September 11, 1999 by the LINEAR project and was first named 1999 RQ36. It was later named after the Egyptian mythological bird associated with creation and rebirth, a name suggested by a student from North Carolina. Bennu is about 490 metres wide, shaped like a spinning top or diamond, and orbits the Sun every 436 days. It comes close to Earth roughly every six years, which is why it is classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid.
