Good movie, underrated.

This is an excellent and well-written film.  Fox was right to sue Brando for walking out.  If he did not want to do the film, he should not have signed the contract.

I'm old enough to remember seeing the film when it came out and I don't remember Bella Darvi being terrible at all.  She seemed to be right in her part - which as I remember is a rather difficult part.  The film did make an impression on me - mostly because of Edmund Purdom.  The other thing that made a big impression on my teen mind was the brain operation at the beginning of the film.  Fascinating.  Strangely enough, I didn't remember the rest of the cast until this video.

Jean Simmons was such a doll in this pic.

That French accent made Bella Darvi sound more suductive since French is considered to be a Romantic language

I found the movie a morality tale=With a spiritual depth most movies cannot match...time well spent.

Star credits do sometimes put the bigger established names first to catch attention then introduce the star or lead character  with " and introducing" or "starring" the main or lead character.

Bella and Edmond were the highlights of the film.
Monroe and Brando could  not have pulled this off.
Darvi in particular was perfection! Her accent, movements, and bone structure were otherworldly. I understood everything she said.
Shame on old timer Jean Simmons.

Got interested in Egyptology when I was taken to the Oriental Inst. in Chicago as a small kid; read Waltari's 'The Egyptian' in my teens and saw the film much later.  Film's production values, costumes and sets, higher than those of 'Ten Commandments'; for example, I lived with family of Egyptian dancers DeMille interviewed as research for 'Ten Commandments' and he totally ignored their input, as well as Egyptian paintings & reliefs.  I always like Purdom, saw him as Herod the Great in my teens, very good actor.  Liked Akhenaten's line in 'The Egyptian': "Just because they can't see light, shall we crawl into the darkness with them?" (something like that, can't remember it exactly).

Marlon Brando played Napoleon in Desiree. He was perfect in the role. Just as well he took it.

Bela Darvi was perfect in the role. She was totally charismathicaly exotic.

Purdom was also very good. His performance was very subtle and human.

Jean Simmons sounds jealous and insignificant.

How many times does the AI voice repeat the same "facts" while showing the wrong people?

Well made movie, lots of artistic license

Thanks👍🏼

I don't think Brando would have been any good at all. I can't see him having the tenderness to play Sinhue. Edmund Perdom was perfect and I loved the film and still do. A totally undervalued actor. Loved the book too.
Just to point out that Purdom did not lip sync all of the vocals in the Student Prince. Just the singing. Mario Lanza was replaced because he had put on too much weight. That was a good film too.

Showed the author of the book instead of Harry Shearer.

Time has been kind to this movie. It radiates a golden glow of old Hollywood. If I hadn't seen this poorly realized behind the scenes thing, I never would have thought of the things it mentioned. To me, having just watched this for the first time in 2026, it was a hidden gem of a movie.  In my poorly educated opinion, every single actor in this movie was perfect for their roles. I thought everybody was not only terrific, but amazingly compelling to boot. Especially the actor portraying Akhenaton. While they took a bit too much license with his theology, he was to my best knowledge the first major civilizational ruler to believe monotheistically. And that makes you think in any event.

I absolutely LOVE this film, as well as the book it's based on (I absolutely recommend reading the book!!). I hate to say this, bot if Marlin Brando was the lead character, this film would have absolutely BOMBED!!!! It's THAT simple. Edmond Purdom MADE this film, it's THAT simple! ONLY Edmond Purdom could have ever been the star here, and anyone else would have ruined this beautiful movie. Watch and listen to everything Edmond Purdom, and especially listen to the way he speaks, and acts, as a physician! Edmond Purdom was, and is, an amazing actor, and because if his talents, this story and film will live on forever. Also, Bella Darvi played Nefer BEAUTIFULLY! Her heavy accent not only went beautifully with her part, she' like Mr. Perdum, was an amazing actress. Her accent made her part beautiful in a way that lives on to this day, and I have never had trouble understanding her at all. Remember, Nefer is a narcissists and sociopath who uses men and ruins them, the way narcissists do, and her voice and acting makes her so amazing as what she is ("And a cat can't help being what it is"). (BTW: The daughter of the Pharoah, as well as her mother, are both also sociopaths as well) Also, the queen is another sociopath as well. When I saw this as a kid, I had a crush on Gene Simmons, who played Merit, the bar maid. She was absolutely beautiful, loving, empathic. Also, I myself am an empath, and this story is made for empaths like me. Anyone sensitive like me can see just how frightening sociopaths like Nefer and the Queen can be, and the actresses who played them did so perfectly!! BTW, I am MUCH younger than this film. I saw it as a kid in the late 80's and 90's, and I used to watch it over and over and over again because this did, and still does, have such attraction for me, again, as an empath

Thank you for this

I loveit wish playing  &TV again some people can't  afford  to pay cable it will be nice ❤😊

edmond purdom nailed this role.....and a stud muffin to boot!  peter ustinov also made the film work......and toth ...tommy rettig ....stared in jeff's collie (lassie ..the early days)

3:38 ""The Egyptian" remained the most notable role of his entire career" - FALSE - his most notable role - and one which usually received much praise - is his in "The Student Prince" - he took on Mario Lanza's role after Lanza was fired - Purdom lip-synced to Lanza's singing so well - that it fools those unfamiliar with Mario Lanza's voice

The Student Prince was not a financial flop; it was actually considered a financial success for MGM

The Egyptian made money and technically was not a financial flop - tho it was a critical and commercial disappointment that failed to meet the very high expectations set for the epic genre
