I would prefer the first one.
It has the most interesting layout and with so little extra space in these small units, the storage space under the bed platform is really usefull!

I really like the first one. So much storage, doors that separate the living space so you have an actual bedroom, and the balcony is large enough to accommodate a chair.

The other two were lacking badly in storage. I did appreciate the good-sized balcony at the second one, it's virtually like having another room.

I need something just like that first one so I can come visit for the summer. I want to take long walks at night in those city neighborhood style districts where the roads aren't wide enough for cars and everybody rides a bicycle.

The quirk in apartment 2 is a pass through. You can set snacks there if you're having a guest for movie night or gaming and then put the dirty dishes there to grab them and wash in the sink. It makes.more sense for a larger apartment, but it does give you a tiny bit.more counter space.

First one is best, got that upraised sleeping area, plenty of storage, and best of all already comes with natural door to give feeling of privacy.

I agree with your assessment. The third one is the most practical, but the first one is far more interesting. As someone else mentioned ,you can partition the " stage" into a nice little bedroom.

A delightful tour of three apartments, each with a different quirk or selling point. I liked the first one the most, and I'd pick that one to live in.

- About apartment 1: love that there is so much storage, that is always welcome. Really love this apartment, it's top! Plus points for: elevator, 'separate' sleeping area, lots of storage, balcony, sceens, bathroom-window, the toilet-sink and window in the toiletroom, sliding doors, induction stove! Yep, worth the price and would gladly stay there!
- Ap.2: we call that a 'pass-through hatch', hun. Plus points for: elevator, balcony, induction stove. Minus point for bathroomwindow! Was an okay apartment but still love the first one much more ;-)
- Ap.3: Plus points for: elevator, induction stove, balcony by kitchen (with screen!), window screens, 2 bathroom windows!!,  toilet with sink, top floor.
Still love first one the most!!

All of them are very well organized.

Would also opt for the first one. You get the most bang for your buck, a lot of storage, you could hide your futon / bed and a separate kitchen. The third apartment would be my second choice, especially as I do not like "walk through kitchens" like in the second apartment. Another benefit from the third unit: the main room is more like a square which provides more flexibility.

The quirky thing in apt. 2 is a "pass-thru" which usually has a metal corrugated rolling door, but it's for passing hot food through without having to walk from space to space.

Apt 1- I like the raised area as a bedroom. Swing your legs over the side and you're already halfway to your morning pee. (Or sleep in the storage if you're a delicate sleeper)

Apt 2- Way too utilitarian.

Apt 3- A bit dark for being so high up. The double balconies are great to get a nice breeze in there to blow out the winter manstank. That bathroom floor looked like a coal miner was living there.

The "Use ESP" nature of communicating in Japan was definitely one of my greatest annoyances when living there. Looking back I think I preferred the relative directness of Koreans in this regard but that certainly had its limits too.

That closet in NYC would be $3,000/month if you were lucky
