I actually see a huge benefit of doing this while recording to lessen hi hat bleed in the snare mic

Charlie played his hats like no other. He was brilliant at putting hi-hat swoops in  places you'd never expect. Great video, thank you!

Levon Helm said he got the hi hat thing from Richard Manuel.  Check out Richard Manuel drumming…there is footage of him playing in the Last Waltz on “Evangeline”.  He had an unorthodox herky jerky style that was very unique.  Levon was inspired by that.

When Charlie play in hi hats and ride,I think that so cool

Charlie has the same feel that Rudd and Ringo had a certain swing to the groove on the hihats!

Ringo also does the hi hat opening on 2 and 4 occasionally, you can see it on the You Don't Come Easy performance in Concert for Bangladesh

Really interesting. It's clear you're a great drummer, especially given your desire to delve into every detail. I'd always thought that Charlie, at a certain point in his career, had health problems and therefore physical stamina, and that he simply considered playing as few notes as possible with his right hand, especially in live concerts, which were quite long. Another explanation, in my opinion, was that he'd met reggae drummers and done something similar, but you've shown that he'd already started swatting flies with his right hand in 1972.

I’ve played the song, Happy off Exile On Main Street in a cover band and it isn’t easy to cop that feel and tempo. It’s difficult to not sound too heavy handed and “footed” when playing it.
