Resin print failures halfway through? This is probably why.
Lift height and lift speed matter way more than you’ve been told—especially if you’re not using a tilting-vat printer.

I think I may have a possible solution to this issue for everybody doing resin prints so I'm doing an experiment. I'm going to get a piece of gorilla glass cut to fit my new S4U16k as an experiment to replace the release film with a more rigid but less resistant to light and capable of basically perfect resolution. I'll see if it can handle the tear strength as well. Think a really big piece of the bendy glass used for mobile screen protectors. Film gasketed edge of course but the entire primary bottom being a sheet of incredible tough, flexible and perfectly translucent material may be the end of replacements. Throwing this in here as I was watching this video as part of my research for this project. Another excellent video too Ross.
I think it may have some incredible possibilities with the strength of the material and Corning makes some seriously impressive materials. What do you think? I may even FINALLY launch my Patreon and my channel back up just for this project.

Why im not getting this setting in ultra 16k? no lift speed mentioned. When printing the straight lines are become wavey or compressed likely.

Wow! Makes total sense why it happens now you point it out.
I've never had much trouble with this, maybe because I don't run at full speed. A bit like you, I aim for a successful print so dial things back a bit.

Bro thank you!!!! I've been 3d printing for almost 2 years, and most of my prints would come out ok! Now with these settings my prints are coming out 100% Thank you for this helpful vid, I'd rather the print take longer then wasting resin on prints I keep discarding that come out bad most of the time

I have a couple of prints that look absolutely sliced and diced, and I've been tearing my hair with exposure times. So yeah, 99% certain that this is actually what I should be looking at.

I've FDM printed for a few years now, well aside from the last 12 months when my printer got damaged moving homes, and I never got around to fixing it. I recently took the plunge into Resin. I wondered why people always complained about issues, every print was working great. I started to understand some of the slicer settings, and started playing with them. I queued up a 14 hour long print, with 2 models on the plate, and about half way through, I noticed this problem on one of them. I let the print finish, as one of the models was perfect. I didn't worry too much, I figured it must have just been a one off. Until the next print completely failed. I tucked tail, cleaned the vat, filtered the resin, and deleted all my changes in the slicer, and prints now working perfect again.

But now I KNOW why they failed, and I know what setting it was that I'd messed up. Now that my hiatus is over, and I got a few random novelty prints out of the way, I can get to what I bought it for... Making functional parts. Tablet/phone stands, parts for projects, tools etc. Now that I have a resin printer, I may even consider miniatures as a hobby, it always interested me a little, just never really got into it. What's the best place to get models from?

Perfect example of "Ross is right" - I was originally disappointed with my Mono X 6Ks printers because of these exact failures. Discovered that Lychee has TSMC disabled by default. Turned that on, adjusted the settings, and - et voila! I've not had a failure since through 4 FEP changes.

3 minutes in, and it's spot on!

I just had the exact same thing happen - After 18 months, my printer "just stopped" printing nicely, more or less like you state. I knew from running the 'exposure' cycle to get a full film to clean stuck stuff from the film that the release film was hurting anyway. Drained the vat, and... yup.

The film definitely needed replacing - not just from stretching, but from wear. It wasn't leaking yet, but there was a milky "grid" visible from the edges of many previous prints. After film replacement, all of my problems vanished.

In my case, I'm not entirely convinced TSMC would've been completely helpful (with the milky film & all), but I'm just some guy, y'know? It's definitely something to try out in the future.

So this will fix it if this is from the lift. But I've found this can also be from improperly hollowed models with suction cups forming from the resin having nowhere to go, creating much higher peel forces, or improperly supported models causing partial support failure. I've found that a lot of miniature creators don't support it in a way that makes sense (The use of only light supports instead of light medium and heavy supports, hiding the heavy supports where they won't be seen or not adding enough supports to maintain an edge or flat face leading to dimples where the supports are, etc). And that spending 15-20 minutes tweaking the support leads to noticeably reduced splitting, it also leads to better fitting multipart models without the need to fill gaps or sand down to get the mating edges to mate properly. That and checking for suction cups and adding extra holes where necessary have meant that I haven't had failures in a good while, and I haven't tweaked my lift settings at all.

Thank you so much for this video! Finally I have the settings that I know work because they are tested (even across many different printers) and not my gut feeling. When starting with 3d printing and researching this topic it always like: "the lifting speed should be something between this and that value..." and so on. Or like: "don't make it too fast or too slow or it will fail". So I love your "take these values and you'll be fine" approach. So thank you again!
