This week on the Rockonteurs podcast, we welcome a wonderful partnership of band mates and best friends. Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill join Gary and Guy to discuss their new shared memoir ‘Our Secrets are the Same’ - which is out on October 2nd.
It’s a candid, moving, and funny set of stories about how they have managed to stay so close and still continue to lead the creative charge of Simple Minds, a band who have sold over 60 million records.

'Live In The City of Light' was Simple Minds best live album, when Mel, and the genius that is Mick Macneil were still in the band.

Mick's keyboard intro to 'Book of Brilliant Things' was incredible.

Jim and Charlie have to thank those wonderful musician that made the real Simple Minds music: Mick Macneil, Derek Forbes, Brian Mcgee and Mel Gaynor.

Jim is totally right, you carry the memories of your favourite gigs with you through life. A few years ago, I had a conversation with him about one of mine, Simple Minds at the Lyceum in December 1982. 100s of gigs later, it's still in my top 5. On another note, Simple Minds early line up were an exceptional bunch of musicians.

Thanks guys, that was great! Charlie does not get the attention and recognition he deserves, and I'm surprised on YT and other places that there is so little information about his playing and tone building techniques aimed at hobby guitarists. Or guitar lessons on their songs focusing on Charlie's parts. You can find so much on The Edge (which is great) but very little for Charlie, not sure why that is. I also recently found my £4.50 ticket for the Lyceum show in London 19th Dec 1983, amazing show!!!

Never the same without Mick McNeil and Derek Forbes. The early albums with them were THE band legacy.

Great to see them still doing their thing with a smile on their faces… although I don’t think I’ve ever not seen Charlie smiling … lovely fellas

I've always been a fan of Charlie's playing style and the way he forms his sound, and I wish for many more songs and concerts to come, with a smile on his face (and Jim's too). ;-)

This could have gone on for hours and I'd be sat here listening with a smile. Thank you for this. I added the book to my list of reading.

So wonderful to hear the great John McGeoch being given his due. Way back in the day, when my justly forgotten band was supporting Magazine on their Scottish dates, promoting The Correct Use Of Soap, he gave me a 15-minute guitar lesson which made me the musician I am today. I owe him so much, and God bless his memory.

I wish there was more talk on their back catalogue of music. Especially their first 5 albums. My favourite part was the final minute where Jim talks about the Futurist charts and the Blitz! ...
And Gary saying they danced to Changeling and I Travel!

And the amazing Futurist crharts which I loooove reading when I see them pop up!

And, the mention of Icehouse x

like a marriage, the two of us, but i haven't tried to take his house. ha! i love it when they talk about their parents. may not be true, but i heard a great story about jim's mom - maybe? - getting their first rehearsal space. worth hearing if you ever get the chance.

Saw them in 1981 in a small club in Newcastle, Australia. It was pretty awesome.

I love all of these people.

Brilliant episode, I've loved Simple Minds since I was a teenager in the 80s!

And as someone that lives in (and absolutely adores) NYC, this city certainly still has a smell! Several, actually! 😂

Saw Simple Minds in São Paulo recently. Brought back memories of seeing them in Scotland, England, and Brazil once before. Thank you Charlie and Jim. Looking forward to the memoir. Will bring back great memories and times. My wife and I willl be in Taormina in late October.
