This video covers what really happened to Ottoman Royals after the fall.

In 1924, every living member of the Ottoman royal family — around 150 to 200
people — was stripped of citizenship and expelled from Turkey by law. Princes,
princesses, children, and women in their eighties who had never left the palace
walls were given as little as 48 hours to leave the only country they had ever
known. Their titles were abolished, their property seized, their names written
out of the republic.

A century later, their descendants are still here.

This documentary follows the House of Osman from the last sultan's escape aboard
a British warship on the Bosphorus in November 1922, through fifty years of
exile across Paris, Nice, Cairo, Beirut, Damascus and Hyderabad, to the three to
five hundred Ottoman descendants living around the world today.

We cover the fall of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, the Treaty of Sèvres,
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the Turkish War of Independence, the abolition of the
sultanate and the caliphate, and the 1924 expulsion law — and then the human
stories behind them:

• Mehmed VI, the 36th and last Ottoman sultan, who died in debt in a rented
villa in San Remo and was buried in Damascus because he was not allowed home
• Abdülmecid II, the last caliph, given one night's notice — who spent it
packing books, and spent the next twenty years in France painting the palace
rooms he would never see again
• Princess Dürrüşehvar, who went from a Paris exile to the court of the Nizam of
Hyderabad, then outlived every political order she ever belonged to, dying in
 London in 2006 at 91
• Şehzade Ömer Faruk, the prince who quietly let the throne go and built an
 ordinary life in Egypt instead

We also cover the long fight to return — the decades of statelessness, the
partial repeal that let Ottoman women return in 1952 and men in 1974 — and who
the Osmanoğlu family are today: doctors, lawyers, engineers and academics, on
four continents, seeking no restoration at all.
