Strange New Worlds Season 5 Has 6 Episodes to Fix EVERYTHING

Strange New Worlds Season 5 has just six episodes to complete one of the biggest transitions in Star Trek history — from Captain Pike’s Enterprise to the Enterprise of The Original Series. But can it actually pull it off?

The Season 4 finale has given us a fascinating glimpse into the future, and it raises some BIG questions about what comes next.

We now know that James T. Kirk is Captain of the Enterprise, Christopher Pike is an Admiral, Ortegas has left the ship, M'Benga is on Vulcan — and Kirk's reaction to a question about La'an suggests there may be a much bigger story waiting to be revealed.

But there's an even bigger problem. Pike's famous accident hasn't happened yet.

So how does Strange New Worlds get from the Enterprise we know today to the Enterprise we know from Star Trek: The Original Series — and do it in just six episodes?

In this video, we break down the major storylines Season 5 needs to resolve, including:

How Kirk becomes Captain of the Enterprise? What happens to Christopher Pike after he leaves the Enterprise? Why Una's future could be one of the biggest questions Season 5 has to answer? Where Ortegas goes after leaving the Enterprise. What happened to La'an — and why Kirk finds her difficult to talk about? What Uhura remembers after seeing her own future. How Gary Mitchell could be introduced before his Original Series story. And whether Season 5 can finally bring Pike's story to its conclusion.

Is six episodes are enough to make us believe how it gets there?

Sadly Nick, I think you've put more thought into this than the writers of this show probably have.

I don’t expect much. I will be pleasantly surprised if we get one good episode.

The biggest problem is that in TOS episode 11, Season 1 (Menagerie, Part 1). The Commodore asked Kirk if he "had ever met Captain Pike." Kirk responds that he met him when "he was promoted to Fleet Captain." That almost sounded like, Yeah, I met him, but only once. In Strange New Worlds, Pike and Kirk developed a deep relationship. The SNW Kirk we know would have taken Pike to Talos himself once he saw him in sickbay. SNW Kirk would have accepted a court-martial to help Pike.

If Pike becomes an Admiral it proves SNW is in an alternate universe/timelines. The reason is Pike only becomes a Fleet Captain not Admiral. It’s shown on The Menagerie episode.

La’An gets a spinoff crossover series with the Muppets.

I do not believe that SNW has to end with all the TOS characters in place.

I feel like with how big Star Trek is, having a requirements to writer that they have watched everything and can answer live quizzes about TOS and those related movies of that era is a must.

I think you are crediting the writers with way more talent for story telling then they actually have.

Season 5 will involve one hell of a temporal anomaly.

Is anyone interested in this show anymore? In the original two parter Kirk says he only met Pike when he took command of the Enterprise.

It's possible that Pike was given the brevet rank of Admiral for a mission (just as he was given the brevet rank of Fleet Captain in season 2). Sometimes officers who held a brevet rank are still addressed by or referred to by such even after returning to their permanent rank. One example is G. A. Custer (commanding 7th Cav. at Little Bighorn) is often called General Custer even though he was actually a Lt. Col. but held the brevet rank of Major General during the US civil war.

This means that in the span of less than a year, Kirk gets promoted 2 ranks. That's not very plausible.

I’d say you’ve got it wrong about Uhura now having knowledge of the year ahead. All she knows is what she saw and experienced In the brief moments in episode 10 when she jumped forward and switched places with one-year-ahead- Uhura. The future Uhura goes into the past with knowledge of the future but past/present Uhura does not return at the end of the episode with a full year’s memory of events

I would like to see Pike being contacted by Vina telling him the Telosians will help him in the future the same way they helped her. But he will need to live on Talos IV. And that they will give him a purpose again of living on the surface and rebuilding the planet. All he has to do is say yes. Then the events of The Menagerie convince him to do it and the yes beep in the chair when Kirk asks "Chris, do you want to go there"? makes an even bigger impact 60 years later!!

Trying to change his future Pike leaves Star Fleet, only to suffer a horrific life-changing burns in a turkey fryer incident at James Kirk's thanksgiving dinner.

And instead we’ll probably get a Simpsons episode, a sitcom episode, a John Wick episode, a Godzilla episode and a Drag Race episode. Before tying up all the loose ends towards the end of an actual Star Trek episode ep6.

I think Season five is all about transition to Kirk's era, and they leave Pike's Unfortunate Accident out of it entirely.

I have no faith in the writers

@johnwynder827 1 day ago

I like Pike and I am sad about his fate!😢

Season 4 was so badly written that my expectations are rather low. I doubt we'll see any subtlety in their attempt to transition to TOS.

I would not even be surprised if they mostly resort to a lot of lazy one-line references to off-screen characters & events, like they did in the final episode of Season 4, rather than develop any serious plot lines.

While I definitely enjoyed the first two seasons of SNW, I can't say the same for the third & fourth seasons. Sadly, I'm actually looking forward to new management's decision to reboot the franchise.

And, for the record, the (over)use of time travel as a plot device is just lazy writing.
