Hamish Bowles, Vogue’s Global Editor-at-Large, alongside Caroline de Guitaut, Surveyor of the King’s Works of Art, tours Buckingham Palace for the Royal Collection Trust’s “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” exhibition at The King’s Gallery, exploring Queen Elizabeth II’s extraordinary treasury of royal dress. The exhibition traces her style evolution from a young child in puffed bloomers to her 1947 wedding to Prince Philip, dressed in Norman Hartnell, and on to a dazzling display of aquamarine and ruby tiaras, capturing decades of regal craftsmanship and personal expression.

I’ve said this somewhere else. My mum worked for Sir Norman Hartnal at his design studio in Oxford Street, as a court dressmaker, she worked only on Princess Elizabeth then Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret’s gowns. She worked with 12 ladies to embroider the coronation gown.

i would love to see a full length movie with caroline & hamish talking of every piece in the exhibit - to document the pieces along with the incredible knowledge of such passionate experts coupled with anecdotes would be an incredible piece of history - please please create it - i could watch this for days - so fascinating & also to include stephen jones to talk of hats & other amazing pieces in the exhibit would be brilliant.

A documentary about Queen Elizabeth's clothes and this exhibition would be amazing. I am sure there are so many people who would love to go to Buckingham Palace to see the clothes but don't live in England and won't be visiting.

Her wardrobe has a very tailored symmetry, almost utilitarian feel to it, and even the flashiest pieces like the evening wear and tiaras have an aura of statesmanship to them. How fascinating.

The Little Princesses had quite an impact on American girls. My mother and her sister were the same ages and they did chores and sold produce to buy a collection of the Little Princesses paper doll books. In their 90s they could still recall their favorite outfits — the equestrian outfit for my mom, and the navy coat and sailor hat for my aunt.

Wonderful but I feel it was rushed. Didn't get to really see the clothing that well. We were rushed through the periods.

Her Majesty's outfits were amazing, her wedding dress was stunning in its day, all that sparkle. What always strikes me about pictures/video of her playing as a child, was the way the Queen Mother was always pictured in hat, brooch, pearls and fur cuffs. It does make you wonder if she ever dressed down and actually spent time playing with her children.
