I had the pleasure of filming a night tip-run fishing session at F-cloud (Kumomaru) in Obama, Fukui Prefecture.

This shoot was for "Fishing Lover Tokai" magazine.

Night tip-run fishing at Kumomaru is similar to squid metal fishing, involving anchoring and using the boat's lights to attract squid.

The biggest difference from daytime tip-run fishing is that the depth at which bigfin reef squid can be caught ranges widely, from the surface to the bottom.

Furthermore, in addition to vertical fishing targeting directly below, casting to target the surface to mid-water layers becomes extremely effective.

The most challenging aspect of night tip-run fishing is figuring out how to catch bigfin reef squid suspended near the surface.

Unbelievably, the "Cast Runner No. 3," released this autumn, allowed me to catch bigfin reef squid near the surface, something I had previously struggled with.

The Cast Runner #3 features a slower fall speed than the #3.5 and boasts a side-to-side sliding action thanks to its up-eye design.

When trying to effectively attract squid in limited depths, conventional front-eye jigs tend to bounce upwards after the action.

In contrast, the Cast Runner's side-to-side sliding action allows for targeted appeal at the desired depth, which is a significant advantage.

This unique movement proved extremely effective for targeting "visible squid" near the surface, which were previously difficult to catch.

During this shoot, this pattern proved to be a key factor, leading to a series of successful catches, which was quite impressive.

This fishing trip perfectly combined the unique range-targeting techniques of night tip-run fishing with the characteristics of the Cast Runner #3.

How to effectively target squid near the surface—

This shoot provided a tangible answer to that question.
