Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Affairs continues with a video on the the Yugoslavian Wars. Why did Yugoslavia collapse? Before the Yugoslav Wars began, a struggle over power, identity, and independence was already tearing the country apart. In the opening episode of our Yugoslav Wars series, Kings and Generals traces the road from Tito’s communist federation to the brink of armed conflict in 1991. We explore how Yugoslavia was created, how Tito held its six republics together, and why his death left a political system increasingly unable to contain competing national ambitions and grievances. The story moves from unrest in Kosovo to Slobodan Milošević’s rise in Serbia, where nationalist rallies and political purges helped transform a party bureaucrat into Serbia’s dominant political figure. As Kosovo and Vojvodina lost much of their autonomy, Slovenia and Croatia pushed for greater sovereignty and independence. We follow the collapse of communist party unity, Franjo Tuđman’s victory in Croatia, the mobilization of Croatian Serbs around Knin, and the growing confrontation over weapons and federal authority. By March 1991, Yugoslavia’s leaders were running out of ways to keep the federation together. How did a country built around “Brotherhood and Unity” reach this breaking point? Discover the political decisions, nationalist movements, and institutional failures that set the stage for the Yugoslav Wars.

At 18:45 the photo is meant to be Milan Kucan but shows Hafez Al Assad. Hopefully this is fixed by tomorrow. Also at 18:55 there is the logo of HDZ 1990 which is actually a splinter party from HDZ

small correction: the video says that the šahovnica was reintroduced as the coat of arms of Croatia in the 90's, while in reality it was also in the coat of arms of the socialist republic of croatia

Nice summary of a very complex setting, I hope you have the chance to go into the details of the various conflicts in this series. I know the broad events but lack depth in my knowledge of this war close to home

As a Serb/Croat who has been dissatisfied with the largely biased coverage of Western media toward our conflict, I am pleased with the objective analysis of the political background surrounding the war. Excellent job!

If I could make a suggestion, a deeper analysis of the economic background of the whole country would fill in the rest of the missing context that made regular people support the nationalist demagogues undermining the sanctity of Yugoslavia.

Serbs planned a "meeting of truth" in Ljubljana too, to put sympathetic people in charge, but it failed because Slovenian authorities mobilized the militia (police) and state security services, setting up checkpoints and measures to stop organized groups from traveling to Ljubljana. The Croats also cooperated and prevented would-be "protestors" from traveling to Slovenia.

It is true that Yugoslavia, by 1980s was in one extreme economical and political crisis, which slowly eroded legitimacy of Communist party and system it created. It is also true that because of 1974 constitution, federal government was largely incapable of solving crisis, as that constitution essentially transformed Yugoslavia into confederation with some federal elements (like common army). Federal government as such did not had tools (except army as nuclear option) and institutional base to act unilaterally. Instead, system required total consensus of all 6 republics (and 2 Serbian provinces) for federal government to act. And in climate in which all sides went more and more into extreme nationalism, that consensus started being unreachable.
