Great to see Helen back. Bless her!

This is the content I'm here for. Prefer van life to the high life 👍🏼

My sister went to Lithuania for her hip replacement after getting to the stage were she couldn't walk and could have been waiting another 5 years in Wales. Wales nhs is far worse than England. She paid £7000 everything including flights & hotels & physio. Said fantastic care and has never looked back. Think about it.xx

Great to see you back from your wonderful adventures to China and Thailand James vlogging again with Helen she’s such a star

In my country, Pakistan, my uncle went through the entire hip replacement process, including surgery, within two weeks, so I understand how much pain she must be going through. I honestly don’t know how Eelen is managing to endure all of this. More power to both of you.

I was crying at the houghton weavers comment😂 omg! I bloody love you pair.

This vlog was fantastic and it's good to see you at home👍 I missed Helens beautiful smile, comments and charming personality, so good to have you two together again going to shops and eating out. You encountered one of the most popular scooter rallies of the season on a grand level with all the seniors out and about. Most of all i really think Helen has fantastic taste in cloths, she picked out the perfect wool sweater and Bubble hat for you. I think the beige jumper from M&S looked perfect on Helen, great price for 4 quid👍 So much happening in this vlog, i really loved it!❤

I’ve missed these kinds of videos 😍

We'll miss you Helen take care with that hip ♥

Absolutely loved this one. This is exactly the sort of van-life video I enjoy because it isn’t trying too hard to make everything look perfect. It’s just a proper weekend away, a bit of chaos, a few questionable decisions, some beautiful places, good food and drink, random conversations, changing plans and all the little things that happen along the way.

Clitheroe and Skipton are both fantastic places for this sort of trip as well. There’s something about those Lancashire and Yorkshire market towns that works perfectly on camera. You can wander around without really having a plan and inevitably find an interesting pub, café, shop, market or character somewhere. I actually think that makes a much better video than having every minute of the weekend planned beforehand.

The chaos in Clitheroe was particularly entertaining because you could almost see the weekend starting to develop a personality of its own. Then by the time the Skipton shenanigans arrived, it felt like we were all just along for the ride. That’s what I like about the channel. You never quite know where the day is going, but somehow that becomes the whole point.

There are thousands of van-life channels now and quite a lot of them have become very polished. Beautiful drone shot, coffee being poured in slow motion, doors opening onto a mountain, perfectly arranged breakfast, sunset, repeat. There’s nothing wrong with that, but after a while they can all start feeling remarkably similar.

This is different.

Give me a slightly chaotic weekend in a northern town, wandering around somewhere interesting, finding a decent pub, having a laugh, changing your mind about what you’re doing and occasionally wondering how on earth the day ended up where it did. That feels much more like actually going away in a van.

I also like that the van is part of the adventure rather than the entire subject of the video. Obviously the travelling and overnighting are important, but the interesting bit is what happens when you get out of it. A van gives you the freedom to wake up somewhere, have a look around and decide what happens next. Clitheroe today, Skipton tomorrow, and who knows where after that.

That freedom is probably what attracts so many people to van life in the first place. It isn’t necessarily about disappearing into the wilderness for six months or living permanently off-grid. Sometimes it can simply mean finishing work, throwing a few things in the van and disappearing for a weekend without needing a complicated itinerary.

And these are exactly the sorts of places I think are worth exploring. Everyone knows the big tourist destinations, but Britain is absolutely full of towns where you can easily spend a day wandering around and discovering things. Clitheroe has the castle, the market-town atmosphere and the Ribble Valley around it, while Skipton has the canal, castle, market and the Yorkshire Dales sitting on the doorstep. You could easily make either one the centre of a weekend, so getting both into the same trip is a pretty good effort.

More importantly, though, the video was funny.

There were several moments where I genuinely had no idea what was going to happen next, which is increasingly rare on YouTube because you can normally predict the entire structure of a video within the first couple of minutes.

Here it felt much more like spending the weekend with somebody who says, “We’ll just see what happens.”

And then things happen.

Usually several things.

Often simultaneously.

Occasionally none of them remotely resembling the original plan.

That’s the good stuff.

It also helps that you’re happy to show the ordinary bits. Not every meal has to be incredible. Not every overnight stop has to have a spectacular view. Not every pub needs to be the greatest pub in Britain. Sometimes you go somewhere and it’s brilliant. Sometimes it’s average. Sometimes something unexpected happens and completely changes the day.

That’s travelling.

The imperfections are what make the good moments feel genuine.

I also think northern England is massively underrated for weekends like this. People will happily drive for hours towards the Lake District or Scotland while passing dozens of brilliant places along the way. Lancashire and Yorkshire alone could probably keep a van channel occupied for years. Ribble Valley, Forest of Bowland, Yorkshire Dales, Pendle, Settle, Grassington, Haworth, Hebden Bridge, Ilkley, Harrogate, Ripon, Richmond, Malham… you could just keep going.

And the advantage of doing it this way is that the journey between places becomes part of the weekend rather than something you simply have to endure before reaching the destination.

There’s also something very British about a trip being slightly weather dependent, slightly food dependent and heavily influenced by the discovery of an interesting pub.

You can have a beautifully constructed itinerary at 9am and by lunchtime the entire thing has been abandoned because somebody spotted somewhere that looked interesting.

Correct decision.

Every time.

I’d genuinely rather watch that than somebody racing around trying to tick twelve attractions off a list before sunset.

The best weekends are usually the ones where you come home remembering something that wasn’t supposed to happen.

And judging by this video, there were quite a few candidates.

The filming style helps enormously too because it feels like we’re actually walking around with you rather than watching a travel programme. You notice little things, comment on things as you find them and occasionally disappear down a completely unnecessary rabbit hole.

Please never edit those bits out.

They’re half the reason I watch.

You can find perfectly produced travel documentaries everywhere. What’s much harder to find is somebody whose personality makes you interested in watching them wander around a town you might otherwise never have considered visiting.

That’s the difference.

I started watching because I like travel and van-life videos, but increasingly I find myself watching because I want to see what ridiculous situation develops next.

And somehow, despite all the chaos, these videos actually make me want to visit the places you go.

That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give them.

I’ve now mentally added Clitheroe and Skipton to the increasingly ridiculous list of places where I think, “We should go there for a weekend.”

You’re costing me money.

The other thing I appreciate is that there’s no obsession with pretending van life is some sort of permanently idyllic existence. Anyone who has travelled around Britain knows the reality involves parking restrictions, questionable toilets, finding somewhere to eat, checking whether you’re actually allowed to stay somewhere, weather changing every fifteen minutes and occasionally spending far too long discussing something completely trivial because there’s nothing else to do.

But that’s part of the fun.

There’s a big difference between a holiday and an adventure.

A holiday generally goes roughly according to plan.

An adventure usually starts when the plan goes wrong.

This weekend definitely drifted towards the second category.

And I’m very glad it did.

Clitheroe looked great, Skipton looked great, the surrounding countryside looked beautiful and the various shenanigans tying everything together made the whole thing hugely entertaining.

More weekends like this please.

No need to manufacture anything.

Pick a town.

Drive there.

Park the van.

Start filming.

See what happens.

If everything goes smoothly, lovely.

If everything descends into chaos, even better for us watching.

That’s probably terribly selfish, but I suspect most regular viewers know exactly what I mean.

A final observation: videos like this are a really good reminder that you don’t need to travel halfway across Europe to have an adventure. There are fascinating places a couple of hours from most of us that we’ve probably driven past repeatedly without stopping. Sometimes the best thing you can do is choose somewhere almost at random and give it a chance.

Walk around.

Talk to people.

Have something to eat.

Find a pub.

Look at the buildings.

Learn a little bit about the place.

Stay overnight.

Move on the following morning.

Simple.

And somehow those little weekends can end up being far more memorable than trips you’ve spent months planning.

So yes, CHAOS in Clitheroe and SHENANIGANS in Skipton is a pretty accurate description.

Although I feel “loosely organised northern expedition gradually deteriorating into extremely entertaining nonsense” might also have worked.

Possibly a bit long for the thumbnail.

Thanks for taking us along.

Another cracking weekend, another couple of places added to the list, and another video where I sat down intending to watch ten minutes and somehow ended up watching the whole thing.

Keep the chaos.

Keep the wandering.

Keep the pubs.

Keep the random discoveries.

Keep the conversations.

And above all, please keep making the videos exactly like this.

Because the shenanigans are the best bit.

Can't believe you did the Peter Kay thing with the taxi driver! 😂

Paying private it's often the same consultant doing NHS

I sincerely hope Helen gets sorted soon and enjoy your wonderful travels. Thanks for the video James.

Great vlog love watching you both  xx

Them kids screaming in the restaurant wou😅😅ld drive me to walk out james.😆🙃

Royal Hampshire County Hospital have come out the past few days asking for more patients for hip and knee replacements as they speciize in orthopedics as they have the capacity to do that, do the nhs right to chose, just an option for Helen with her Hip.

Another lovely vlog James and nice to see Helen too. 🐞

Just commenting in sincere appreciation and also as my contribution against algorithmic suppression. Thank you x

The thing here is that the NHS isn't free. We the taxpayers pay for it, it isn't Goverment money, its 'our money'. Why should Helen feel as though she should pay again, for an operation ,which she clearly needs. A young women, doing a vital job, in a service that needs her,yet are not looking after her. It makes my blood boil.

Brilliant video James and Helen. Definitely deserves to be on the main channel.
