How does such a good podcast with the brilliant and personal favourite WW1 historian of mine Dr. Spencer Jones only have 33 subscribers? It's a bloody outrage.

I think Dan brings up a very good perspective with who loses the Battle of the Somme less.

Incredible perspective. Of course you cannot contextualize the entire history of the Somme or the greater context and complete history amid myriad fronts in this era in a single hour, you and Dr Jones do a damn good job completing the thought in this discussion.

This and it's sister, both sides if the wire, are the only 2 podcasts I listen to at the moment (plus any thing else featuring dan and Spencer obviously)

Keep it up, guys! Hands down the best WWI on YT🙌🙌👍👍

Just found this channel, and I think it's excellent.
I have read a few of Dr Jones works, and his very high standards have not slipped.

This is amazing

Great podcast bro, bery informative and really great insights.

It's interesting that from an aviation viewpoint, the Battle of the Somme is seen as a period of relative success for the RFC. However the German air service is reorganised and towards the end of the battle introduces a new generation of single seat scout aircraft that will turn the air war in their favour as seen in the Battle of Arras in 1917.

You desperately need a social media manager. Amazing content.

The Bangalore torpedo was invented in 1912. Why was more use of it not made to clear barbed wire from relatively safe positions?

To summarize...kicked off on 1.7.16, across 18mile front, lasted till November.  On first day nearly 20,000 brits/commonwealth dead and 40,000 wounded or reported sick.  Over the 5 months...nearly 420,000 commonwealth casualties and of which nearly 96,000 dead

I remember thinking as a 10 year old boy, ‘why didn’t the British renew the bombardment 5 mins after they stopped, so they can catch the Germans in the open’ on the 1st July. I’m not trying to toot my own bugle, but if I as a kid could’ve thought of this tactic, why did it take the British army 3 weeks and 70k casualties to try this ‘Chinese method’ ? Surly it can’t have been that difficult to order the artillery to stop firing at 7:25am, then resume at 7:30, then halt again at 7:35? This would’ve at least knocked out a few machine gun teams and inflicted a few losses? And without risking like sounding too much of an arm chair general, I don’t understand why they didn’t position some units in shell holes nearer to the German lines, so they could shock the defenders while the main forces quickly followed. The Russian army used these exact methods in the brusilov offensive, to great affect, they used a fake end to a bombardment several times lasting all day, this cycle of stopping and starting meant less and less defenders rushed to the parapets each time, and when the assault finally begun, assault teams where as little as 30 meters away from the enemy. I understand the troops in the volunteer army were inexperienced, but surly slightly more sophisticated artillery tactics could’ve been used? It seems very unimaginative given that other armies were using more effective methods at the time.

How does one talk about the catastrophe that is the Somme without sound callus towards the human tragedy. I don't envy anyone the task.

"They did the same thing over and over again - not true" Well unfortunately this was often true. Look at Hunter Weston at Krithia for example. It wasn't until Vimy and Currie that things really started to improve.

These podcasts are AMAZING....You need sooooo many more subscribers
