carl is criminally underrated, such a unique talent

The grave diggers painting is genius, my first interpretation of it was the same man battling with himself against his own destiny. The inner self resulting in the death of self.

Carl was there at the Massive Black conference in LA in 2013 or 2014, which was the weekend that pushed me to finally go after being an artist. 9-10 years later, it’s been a blast and I’m grateful for that magic weekend!

So inspiring, thanks Jeff for this talk with Carl. His insight into the human condition is monumental.

So many words of wisdom- what a great interview. Love the artwork. A philosopher/psychologist gone artist who paints and dares to speak his mind in such compelling ways. Wow!

As an illustration major at Ringling, you were required to take two years of traditional drawing and painting from life. Many of the instructors were accomplished figurative painters in their own right. I can't imaging that that time spent in the studio working from life while at Ringling had no benefit worth mentioning. AS far as "atelier" training, there were instructors in that program that were atelier trained in authentic, traditional ateliers including the Boston School through the teaching of William Paxton, R. H. Ives Gammell and Richard Lack. Lack's atelier was perhaps the first atelier that started the whole atelier movement.

Architects have this song Gravedigger, maybe he heard that in a mall and subconsciously painted it.

It is very frustrating living in a small town in Mexico and trying to access figurative painting on the internet and the algorithms as you noted never or very rarely give real fine art a chance I would have never heard of some of if not all of your guests had I not found your podcast . thanks for the interesting guests and an artists perspective when questioning without all the cultural baggage.

So I finished listening, and what an epic chat! Really inspired by the artists like Carl, Jeff, and my friend Sean whom put themselves through 6 months to a year of pain to create a massive epic multi figure piece. I think that is the height of artistry, especially when you consider how difficult/borderline impossible they are to sell (they have to cost multiple 6 figures to even make sense of the effort, hard to find collectors who understand that). But when I think about artistic contribution, it is exactly this type of work that comes to mind. I have been inspired to start my first multi figure giant composition next year. Hold me to it!

Really fascinating discussion, and I see now Carl's love of Baroque and Renaissance multi-fugure works. Definitely will look into the NY Academy of Art, close by! Great job, Jeff!

a canoe race is not like a running race or a car race etc. so the idea of sitting in a boat and staying focused on each stroke etc to get you smoothly and confidently to the finish line.... is a very technical skill.... sloppy paddling will destroy your flow! its a competition of mind and physical skill.
Illustration thinks deeper and helps to flesh out an artistic thought.
