Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a 1998 American black comedy adventure film based on Hunter S. Thompson's novel of the same name. It was co-written and directed by Terry Gilliam and stars Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro as Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo, respectively. The film details the duo's journey through Las Vegas as their initial journalistic intentions devolve into an exploration of the city under the influence of psychoactive substances.

Hunter S. Thompson was a real person and this is a story he wrote about a job he had covering the desert races.

The thing many forget/don't realize is that this is based on a true story. There's even hours of audio recording of it all as they show in the movie.

The sadness when he talks about the failure of the '60s is the capstone of the movie. It explains the tailspin of both Thompson and his generation. Gilliam and Depp captured that.

Hunter S. Thompson was sitting at a table in the bar @24:40. As Johnny turns around to look at him, he says rather quietly, "Hey, that's me."

Gonzo is the style of journalism that Hunter S Thompson pioneered

Oscar Zeta Acosta (Dr. Gonzo) is Mexican but Hunter S. Thompson said he was a 300 lb Samoan named Dr. Gonzo in the book because Acosta was actually an attorney and it might damage his reputation. Acosta didn’t like that but by the time he found out it was too late to change it so he had Thompson add a picture of the 2 of them on the back cover of the book with a caption that said Acosta was Dr. Gonzo. That’s why he’s called Samoan but played by a Latino actor in the movie.

It's a faithful representation of the book. I graduated high school in 1977, and virtually everyone I knew within ten years of my age read that book. The lead character is Hunter Thompson. His attorney was Oscar Zeta Acosta, a real person -- a lawyer and Chicano activist from California -- who disappeared off the face of the earth in the early 70s. No one knows how much of the story is real and how much is fantasy, but it doesn't really matter.

Terry Gilliam also directed 12 Monkeys, Brazil, Time Bandits, The Fisher King and a few other movies.

Gary Busey wanting a kiss was totally adlib, because it's Gary Busey.

I'm from Las Vegas and worked at Circus Circus (Bazooka Circus) for many years. Circus Circus wouldn't allow their name to be used for this movie lest it smudge their sterling reputation. Before that, I was brought there many times as a child in the 70s. Yes, it's cartoony. But it's not as far off as you may think. The rotating circle bar by the trapeze was a real thing. Hahaha!

"It's making me feel like I'm losing my mind!"
Terry Gilliam really was the perfect director for this surreal drug frenzy of a story. Lotta Dutch angles, uncomfortable close-ups, and flashing/moving backgrounds really mess with the brain.

"An adult cartoon"
Director Terry Gilliam is an animator, the one American member of Monty Python, he directed "The Holy Grail" co-directed "The Life of Brian" and directed parts of "The Meaning of Life" and did all the paper cutout animations and VFX sequences in those movies and in their show "Monty Python's Flying Circus."
His "Dream Trilogy" ("Time Bandits" "Brazil" "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen") showed us what was possible when someone with his visual imagination gets a hold of Hollywood budgets and VFX technicians.
His most mainstream normal-ish movie was probably "The Fisher King" that still has a lot of surreal, dreamlike/nightmarish imagery because one of the characters is crazy and plagued by halucinatory visions.

“It’s okay. He’s just admiring the shape of your skull.” God I love this movie.

The greatest audio commentary of all time is on the Criterion collection version of the movie. They go interview Hunter as he watches the movie, it's as insane as the movie is haha.

Heres the line you talked over at the airport. It's a classic:
"There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die."

Johnny Depo absolutely nailed the role and Hunter actually praised him for it.

He wasn't wearing a bald cap. Hunter shaved Depps head himself in his kitchen.

Terry Gilliam is an incredible director. He knows how to communicate an atmosphere. He also made "Brazil" - a dystopian love story. Both films are masterpieces.

Lotta great cameos in Fear & Loathing. Tobey McGuire as the hitchhiker, Gary Busey as the cop, Cameron Diaz as the reporter, Ellen Barkin as the waitress, Penn Jillette as a barker, Verne Troyer, Flea, and even Hunter himself - "Jesus Christ, there I am!"
