After the resurrection ritual that revived Voldemort, Harry is killed (Voldemort did not feel the need to posture in front of his Death Eaters).
When Harry finds himself in an all white Kings Cross he is greeted by "death"—Ichibe or a visage of the Soul King—and is offered the chance to either go back or move on.
With no ghost of Dumbledore to greet and manipulate him back to the living world, Harry chooses to move on, to finally escape the control others had over his life.
Finding himself in Soul Society, Harry discovers that it's not much different to the Wizarding World in how it's run.
The further you get from the Seireitei—where Soul Reaper's and Nobles reside—the more impoverished the living environment gets and it reminds him of how the corrupted ministry and Purebloods treated the Half-bloods and muggle-borns when he was alive.
Deciding to enter the Soul Reaper academy under the name Aizen Sōsuke (and hopefully climb the ranks and achieve a position to implement change), he eventually learns that the thing holding the three worlds together, the Soul King, was little more than a battery; an imperfect entity with no say in how the Soul Society is run.
Wanting to reform Soul Society's structure Aizen/Harry decides that, with the amount of power he has (and will continue to grow with his eventual assimilation with the Hōgyoku), he will eventually kill the Soul King and replace him. He aims to stand at the top of the three worlds and shape them according to his own ideals, bringing about a better order; a more just and ideal world where he is the one in control.
