While linguists around the world were classifying all the writing systems in the universe, there was one script that could not be placed in any category. Ultimately, an entirely new classification category had to be created just for that single character. That is Hangeul, the script we use every day.

This video captures the wondrous yet arduous journey of Hangeul—the only script on Earth for which a 'blueprint' remains—from its creation principles and 500 years of tribulation to its current status, where the entire world lines up to learn it.

From King Sejong the Great's creation in 1443 and the scientific design principles recorded in the *Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon*, to the new classification of 'feature script' created for Hangeul by British linguist Geoffrey Sampson, to the evaluations of world-renowned scholars such as John Man, Edwin Reischauer, and Jared Diamond, to the oppression by King Yeonsangun and the Korean Language Society Incident during the Japanese colonial period, to the miracle of lowering the illiteracy rate from 78 percent to around 1 percent immediately after liberation, and finally to Hangeul shining once again in the digital age and amidst the Korean Wave—we have summarized it all in one video.

If you watch until the end, these characters you use thoughtlessly every day will look completely different to you.
