Kudos for getting out there and trying this...I would be so uncomfortable trying to approach someone and speak Japanese, so can only imagine how daunting this must feel. Glad to watch your journey from the beginning!

You can make all kinds of friends, keep at it. When I was younger(before smart phones/internet) I would hang out with Japanese girls and we'd have small conversations while taking turns flipping through a Japanese/English dictionary. I always admired the patience and dedication of those women.

This is so cute hahaha. I am learning Japanese and it’s scary speaking to people in a language you don’t fully understand.

A small helpful tip:

"shooting with a camera" is a bit unnatural, and I'm sure you have heard about gun culture overseas.

"Do you want to take a picture?" is a much better phrase for native English.

I tried to do that too as a foreigner. But I was by myself and my japanese was very bad...so I gave up posting 🤣

You are doing great! One challenge is that many people are on guard in big foreign cities about potential scams or theft, even in very safe Japan. So it is understandable when people are confused and on guard when approached by strangers. But when they see you are genuine, I think many will open up.

I hope you have fun with your project. Everyone is in such a hurry that I think it is difficult to catch people's attention. I have only spent a few weeks in Tokyo, but I would be very surprised if someone older than a school kid spoke to me on the street. I got stopped multiple times by little groups of kids that wanted to practice their English. It was fun.

Just watched both videos, I think you two are onto a great idea with this project - you'll learn English, meet and make new friendships and also maybe overcome some of the shyness/anxiety.
I think that most of the foreign tourist anywhere would be happy to talk to some lovely locals in a way you to are trying with this project, so don't be scared for future attempts. Embrace the awkwardness.
