This must have been the last ever playoff game for Greise and Csonka. They were so dominant in the first half of the 70s, but this Steelers team was to physical and good for the Dolphins or anyone else in 79 to handle. This season also was a last call for a lot of Steelers retired after or soon after the Super Bowl 14 win.
A 21 point lead in a playoff game is a steep hill to climb. Like the Rams jumping on the 1975 Cardinals in the Coliseum on two pick-sixes. Like the Rams, the Steelers only had to milk the clock with that lead to win easily.
When I was a kid, I was aware Rocky Bleier had a war injury but for some reason believed he had a prosthetic leg from the knee down. I know now that it wasn’t actually that extensive of an injury but it was pretty bad nonetheless and a pretty incredible story of perseverance for him to accomplish what he did in his career.
The Steel Curtain held Miami to just 25 yards rushing on 22 carries. The next week in the AFC Championship they held Earl Campbell and the Houston Oilers to just 24 yards rushing on 22 carries. That is preposterous. This type of run defense dominance in back to back playoff games has probably never happened in all of NFL history except for this team and also Pittsburgh in the 1974 playoffs.
The Dolphins of the early 70’s would have again beaten this Steeler team. Steelers were good but their dynasty had a major assist from the WFL when they rip the Dolphins dynasty by signing Warfield , Csonka, n Kick. The equivalent of Swann, Franco, n Blier leaving to the WFL. 1981 they met in the Orange Bowl. The Steelers had their dynasty team still intact n the Dolphins though good had a complete different team n beat them 30-10. This Dolphin team In 79 had Griese n Csonka in their last year n few more from the early dynasty team but it wasn’t close to the 72-73 Dolphins! If not for WFL the Steeler dynasty would have had to wait a few years more to get it going!
