In this video, I explain, in practice, what the post-operative period of hip replacement is like. First, the four factors that most determine the speed and comfort of recovery: the patient's pre-operative condition, pre-operative planning and preparation, the quality of physiotherapy, and the surgical approach (the path through which the prosthesis is placed). In general, more conservative approaches tend to allow for a faster and more comfortable recovery.

To show that this is not just my opinion, I mention serious studies: in one of them, practically all patients underwent physiotherapy on the same day and were discharged in less than 23 hours, returning to driving and work in a few days (averages — and in a specific context of the study). Other high-level studies show excellent early recovery with different approaches, with a slight initial advantage for the direct anterior approach until around the 5th/6th week, when results tend to equalize.

Next, I describe the timeline of my routine: walking on the day of surgery, discharge usually around 26–27 hours later, progressive weaning off weight-bearing between the 3rd and 4th week, and a practically normal life from the 6th to the 12th week. Important: everything here is an average, for cases without complications. Complex cases and pre-existing conditions change the picture, and each patient should be evaluated individually.
