Thanks for watching everyone! All my courses are here! https://buynobaddogs.com/collections/courses

I got a mal once when I was young and naïve and still believed the "it's all in the training and exercise" lie that rescues push. Life was miserable for us both until I realized that we were completely incompatible and found her a more suitable home. Anyone who says that breed traits can be overcome with training needs immediate and public pushback, especially for powerful and driven working breeds.

Jack Russells are CRAZY!
Also working dogs NEED  to work

There's a reason I have two Labradors currently snoozing in my room. I love them, and they are so easy to train to make them good household/walking companions.

And after they grow out of cute puppyhood, all those German Shepherds land in the rescues again and again. Mine was in rescue for 6 months because she knew zero and couldn’t be caught. She’s so smart, with consistent care, training and attention, she was housebroken and learned her basic commands in 30 days. That said, this dog MUST BE EXERCISED multiple times a day with a ball. Thankfully I’m retired and love playing ball and we do some training in between. When she went to the vets a couple weeks ago, the vet tech said she was one of the best behaved German Shepherds she had ever seen. Don’t buy a Shepherd if you don’t love training and playing, but if you do, follow Tom’s training videos and you will have an amazing dog!

"Understand the breed, not just the looks". We bred malamutes for 40 years. First question we asked people was "why do you want a malamute?" If the answer was because they are so pretty, the education began.

I bought a Parson Russell from a lady who questioned me for nearly an hour about what I wanted a dog like him. My answers satisfied her and i had 14 great years with him. Best dog ever!!

I have two female Belgian Malinois, and my brother has my oldest girl’s brother. They’re constant work, but I absolutely love it—having them by my side, training every day, and getting compliments even when people call them GSDs 😂. They’re a true working breed that needs consistent physical and mental work. I have zero regrets, but Mals are definitely not for everyone. They need structure, consistency, and an owner willing to show up every single day.

We had a JRT and she was great because we had land, horses and goats, she patrolled the stables ensuring no rodents dared trespass, she kept our Labrador on guard duty instead of having a lazy sleep. That cocky little strutting around 😂😂. I couldn’t imagine her in a small apartment she’d have gone insane ❤

I grew up around Czechoslovakian wolf dogs and learned very quickly to respect them. German shepherds are another breed I love but I am too old to properly train one now.  But I still love them.

I adopted a "lab" who turned out to be half border collie. Lucky for me, he had more of a lab personality, though he would get that border collie stare sometimes. Absolutely wonderful dog--I consider him to be one of my greatest blessings in life. Really, really, hated water. Never could give him a bath.

I'm so glad I did my research before getting a dog. I still drool over Malinois videos, but instead, I got a GSD from a wonderful show line. He's 8 months old, we still have a lot of work to do, but it was a great choice.

My dog is an 11 year old Kelpie, border collie, blue healer. We got him from the SPCA when he was 12 weeks old. They told us he was a lab mix. We found out very quickly he was not. After we got him we found out he had already been in 5 homes and each home gave up on him. It took some time, but we figured him out and I can't tell you how much I love this guy! He is so smart and athletic and he just wants to help. We've learned he's happiest when he has something to do. (preferably with us). He is able to go to work with me most days and the days he can't he stay's in our fenced yard and herds/guards our 4 chickens. He takes any job we give him seriously. You can count on him, but even at 11 years old if we get complacent, he starts to get 'naughty'. He'll take couch cushions, hats or shoes, anything, he's not allowed to have and he runs passed us. I can't help but laugh when he does it. I'll make him behave for a few minutes and then I'll take him for a walk otherwise, he very quickly starts training me. Who am I kidding. I'm pretty sure he knows as he's running by with his contraban that he's going to get his way. He makes me laugh every day. He's a funny, sweet, energetic dog - worth every bit of effort.

So it's not the breeds that have the problem, it's the people acquiring them without doing their research.

I think some people saw Eddie, the JRT on Frasier and thought, "I want one of those.'

On my 3rd GSD. Everything you said is absolutely true.  I spent time with professional trainers each time, and I ended up with a great dog each time.

There are many breeds of dog on my ‘bucket list’ of dogs, but there are many I would never attempt to own, because I’ve actually spent time researching dog breeds before owning them. You cannot force a breed to fit your life, you absolutely need to choose a dog that will suit your lifestyle. I currently have a Borzoi puppy, I deliberately waited until I was retired so I would have the time needed to put into making her a great dog. I researched the breed, I visited breeders and spoke to them before I decided one would suit me. I absolutely hate seeing Kelpies and Border collies stuck in peoples backyards, (common in my rural Aussie town) - amazing dogs, I love kelpies, but I absolutely do not have the lifestyle that a kelpie would be happy in. You cannot choose a dog based on ‘oh they are so cute’ etc. I think I also learnt this from the many rescue dogs I have owned - any dog can be a great dog, but their breed characteristics will ALWAYS show themselves.

I had a Wolf dog decades ago when I was a teen, let me age myself by saying I got her from a Recycler listing. Long story short, she was rehomed to someone with the adequate home/land and experience. The guilt from that experience shaped my future decisions.

I now own a 3 yr old male Doberman. I spent a year doing intense research before getting him, had a sit down with my husband and kids to discuss the breed characteristics and temperament, we also spoke about dog training and the type of consistency I wanted to see at home. My Dobie is smart, well-trained and absolutely loving to his family. He is naturally protective and alerts me when there is someone I need to be aware of. He is attached to my side at all times and he is exactly what I was look for in a K9 companion.  As a SA survivor, I appreciate the "scary dog" privilege he affords me.

So important to pick a dog that you intend on learning about so that you can be the most ideal steward for them. They deserve nothing less.

I found this channel because my of rescued ACD. I have no clue how this dog ended up in a shelter in Denver, but she was supposedly surrendered for a “lack of time”… I get it now. She was pregnant, shut down and so stressed she went on hunger strike. In 6 months I’ve probably seriously considered rehoming her 3x. But good lord does this dog LOVE and I have changed so much about my life to work with her, and we’ve come a long way in a short time. I just hope I can keep it up, because she’s a reactive, unfriendly pain in the ass, but shes such a great dog.
