Professor Masoud Hussain | Why Do We Procrastinate?

Professor Masoud Hussain is a professor of neurology and cognitive neuroscience at the University of Oxford. He is both a neurologist and a researcher, and for more than fifteen years he has focused on the science of motivation and apathy: how motivation is formed in the brain, why some people start things easily and others do not, and when this system goes awry. He is also the author of the book “Our Brains, Our Selves”.

This video is a translation and summary of his conversation with Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist at Stanford University and host of the Huberman Lab podcast.

This video explains how the brain compares the reward and effort of a task before doing it, what the main differences are between motivated and unmotivated people, and why sometimes thinking about a task is more tiring than doing it. It also introduces some practical and scientific tools for overcoming procrastination: breaking down big tasks, planning ahead, changing the type of reward, and eliminating distractions. Finally, it explores whether social media really engages us through dopamine.

This video will be useful for anyone who struggles with procrastination, lack of motivation, or difficulty getting started.
