She left her life in Brazil to start over in the United States. What Lelê didn't imagine was that her journey would be marked by separation, immigration problems, new beginnings, and an enormous struggle to build her career in America. 🇧🇷🇺🇸
In this episode of the Questions Channel, Paulo Paternes talks with Leila, or Lelê, a São Paulo native who arrived in the United States with many plans and a determination to build a new life.
In Brazil, Lelê was already doing everything. She studied physiotherapy, taught capoeira, Pilates, and English, in addition to having training in other areas. She says she decided to seek a new life in the United States and chose Florida as her destination.
But the plans began to change rapidly.
She arrived married, but the relationship ended about six months later, and her ex-husband returned to Brazil. Lelê decided to stay and continue fighting for the project she had started.
Then came one of the most difficult moments.
According to her account, after about a year of waiting for a change of status, the process was denied. With her life already established in the United States and practically nothing left in Brazil, she became desperate and needed to return to the country.
She left her car, house, and her support system in the United States, packed a carry-on bag and her cat, and went to Brazil to face an interview at the consulate.
And then a twist occurred.
During the consular interview, the conversation switched to English. Lelê presented her case and her ability to support herself while studying. The visa was approved. She says she left the consulate crying, but this time the tears were of happiness because she could return to her life in the United States.
From there came college, physiotherapy, music, capoeira, and many other challenges.
Today, Lelê works in different areas of physiotherapy, maintains her own professional projects, and also develops her artistic career. Her story shows a very different America from the one presented as an easy path to success.
At the end of the conversation, she leaves an important piece of advice for anyone thinking about starting a life in the United States:
Come prepared.
According to Lelê, you need to know why you're here and be prepared to face difficulties, including financial and emotional ones. As she summarizes: "Come prepared for the worst, hoping for the best."
▶️ Watch until the end and learn about a true story of persistence, choices, mistakes, learning, and starting over in the United States.
Comment: would you have the courage to continue after going through all of this?
