Great look into the past, I was only 2 in 1970 but I remember many of these shows and the culture in general. My mom was a long hair guitar playing hippie, some of my first memories are of her playing and singing to me. Really loved The Partridge Family particularly being a big music person from an early age. Loved The Bugaloos too, now I’m going to have the theme song circling in my head all day lol. Great stuff as always, enjoyed it! ✌️

Despite Walter Cronkite's enormous popularity, my family watched the Huntley-Brinkley Report each evening. I always enjoyed visiting my cousins in Florida because, for some reason, each national newscast aired at a different time - so you could watch all three - which I did. I was particularly interested as an 11 year old in 1970 because two of my cousins were in Vietnam. News and politics were always of interest, which is why I earned a degree in journalism and became a TV news reporter for 20 years. Never met any of the aforementioned news anchors, but my wife's family knew Dan Rather and I have a letter he wrote to me back in the 1980s after I sent him a book about Texas/Mexico border radio - one of his interests.

I used to love watching LANCE LINK - and apparently so did actor Tom Hanks. I've heard him mimic the characters and talk about the show. I liked THE BUGALOOS too. Everyone seemed to be watching THE FLIP WILSON SHOW - "HERE COME THE JUDGE, HERE COME THE JUDGE." That reminds that an all girl rock band out of Nashville in the late 1960s - THE FEMININE COMPLEX - recorded a version of "Here Come The Judge." It was a warmup song for them before appearing on a TV show in New York. You can find it on a compilation album, TO BE IN LOVE. Their only studio album, LIVIN' LOVE from 1968 is quite good. Back in college, my roommates and I used to watch THE ODD COUPLE reruns every night at 11:30. Better the second time around! Lastly, one of my favorite shows during the late 1960s was THE NAME OF THE GAME with its opening theme music by Dave Grusin. Thanks, as always, Steve. THE BASEMENT is always a Wednesday night highlight!

I used to love watching David Brinkley on NBC News, as he had that slightly sardonic tone and a twinkle in the eye. In Montreal, we used to have an anchor on our local CBC news who would raise an eyebrow and adopt a wry expression after a report was concluded. Loved that too. Later, that Montreal host was a guest in one of my journalism classes.

Steve……. Every Thursday morning, it’s like talking to an old friend. Thanks for all these great programs and everything you do to pull them off.
I can’t believe how oblivious I was to anything but music in 1970.  With no internet, my only link to the music world was my radio(KNAK) and teen magazines, especially Hit Parader, and of course the weekly KNAK Go! Magazines.   I would call KNAK and ask them to mail me the latest issue, which they graciously did.  Television shows just seemed so stupid to me at the time….and they mostly were.  Hearing about the Partridge Family TV show reminded me of how much I disliked the Monkees when I heard the Wrecking Crew was doing all of their early song tracks.  But I didn’t know at the time that Brian had used the same guys in the past.  The Crew was doing all the backing tracks for the Partridge Family as well as the Ron Hicklin group of singers doing all the vocals, except for David Cassidy’s leads.  The Hicklin group did all the backing vocals for Gary Lewis, Gary Pucket and many others.  I wonder what Gary Lewis and the Playboys sounded like live when all their records were made with studio musicians doing the backing tracks AND the backing vocals?
We were strictly a Cronkite family.   Living north of Salt Lake City by about 100 miles, we only received 2 of the 3 TV network channels very clearly….CBS and ABC.  That left out anything on NBC for us.

I would like to take a moment to pay tribute to my bass and guitar player/singer bandmate Phil who passed away last week from a short but serious bout with pancreatic cancer.     You really get to know someone by playing music with them and counting on them to back you up when playing and singing together.  My best friends through my life have been my bandmates….from junior high and high school clear until now.  I still keep in touch with my high school garage band guys.  Phil will be missed.  A great musician, a great friend, and a really good guy..…. Rock On Phil!

Steve….  Have a great week.  Looking forward to next week’s program………Lamont

I loved the “ Groovy Ghoulies!” That Partridge Family album was my first album! My second was “Elvis On Stage”..talk about a musical contrast! I was always “different “ as a kid lol!

You’ve provided ample examples of shows that motivated young people to ignore television in 1970 . ( I was a senior in college and certainly had better evening entertainment options available . Exceptions to the generally low quality programs were The Smothers Brothers and Mission Impossible . We found great amusement in determining how few words that “ Willy “ , the character played by Peter Lupus actually spoke in the course of a “ mission “ .

WOW! That Baron character from Lancelot Link really looks like Leo G. Carroll from The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Great video as always. Saturday morning TV did not start here till 1974. Strange as it now seems none of the three channels broadcast at that time of day. The Doubledeckers was if I remember rightly mid Atlantic in style in that it was made to be sold to the US and was shaped as English kids for the American market ( and the domestic). For example a bag of money had the dollar emblem not the pound. Mcleod and Mary Tyler Moore were both prime time here and as the seventies went on all the American detective series were popular. All the best Ray.

Fun episode Steve.  Lots of great memories.  I think I watched all these prime time shows, at least the ones that were on before my bed time!

And The Cowsills did the theme song for Love American Style.

Wow Steve.  1970 must've been a helluva time to drop Acid on Saturday morning 😂.
I'll bet that's what Brian Wilson was doing after the disappointment of SUNFLOWER,  you think he was more into weed or cocaine in '70??.

I loved Rod Serlings Night Gallery btw.   So authentically mad it was.

More fond memories here, Steve. Funny, one of the first things that came to mind with this episode is looking to the future/past with the spooky recurring themes we'll see in 1972 on ABC's Movie of the Week series (no doubt inspired by the success of The Exorcist.) On another note, it kinda makes you wonder what happened to Jeremy Gelbwaks, huh? Have a GREAT week!😃

Re:The Double Deckers.  Peter Firth would go into straight drama with the film Equus and so on, while Brinsley Forde turned up in the reggae group Aswad.

I love cartoons from my youth. I loved Josey And The Pussycats and remember when them and the Globetrotters were on the Scooby-Doo movies. Surprisingly I never watched the Archies even though I loved their music. I never watched Lancelot Link as a kid but did get the DVD of it. I also remember all those Sid and Marty Krofft shows.
I love the Cowsills but never watched The Partridge Family although I really like I Think I Love You. My family does not like the song, haha. Didn't the Cowsills sing Love American Style? As always, Great Stuff Steve!

Wikipedia says one of the reasons the Cowsills didn't get their own show was that Shirley Jones instead of the real mother was to play the mother on the show, but I think another factor was the Cowsills' father, who just may have been as bad or worse than Murry Wilson.

In my opinion, the cancellation of Bewitched was a good thing by 1972. Elizabeth Montgomery no longer cared and it showed, and just like the later Three Stooges shorts (also from Columbia Pictures), plots were repeated from earlier seasons.

Most of these shows was never broadcasted in the UK, but I was fermilliar with "The double deckers", "Laugh in" "Mission Impossible"  and " The Walton's" but I was never a big fan of any of them.
