On August 13, 1981, at the height of the Iran-Iraq War, a royalist opposition group in Paris hijacked an Iranian frigate in Spanish waters and intended to sail it to Iranian waters. The "Tabarzin" was one of 12 warships that Iran had ordered from France before the 1979 revolution, and France refused to deliver it to Iran after the revolution, and finally agreed in 1981 to finally deliver the remaining three frigates to Iran, for which it had received money years earlier. The Tabarzin, which was sailing from French ports to Iran, was hijacked by militants. The hijackers were a group of members of the Azadegan organization affiliated with General Bahram Ariana, the former chief of staff of the Imperial Army. Admiral Kamal Habibollahi, the last commander of the Imperial Navy who was in charge of leading the operation, was supposed to approach the waters of southern Iran in the Tabriz frigate as part of this hijacking, and from there, by introducing himself to the Islamic Republic Navy, which was at that time heavily engaged in fighting the Iraqi army, he would send a message that I am Habibollahi and that you should join us to overthrow the Islamic Republic. Major General Abdul Hossein Minuspehr had also coordinated with some of his friends in the Air Force to join them so that, according to the spokesman for the Azadegan militia group, they could “easily overthrow the regime that came to power in Iran.”
It is hard to believe that such a story is true, but the statements of the hijackers, and especially the recent interview by Shahin Espahbadi, the spokesman for the Azadegan militia group, show that the plan to overthrow the Islamic Republic was designed as simply as that, and surprisingly, it was designed and executed by people who were among the highest-ranking generals of the Imperial Army. At the head of these generals was Field Marshal Bahram Ariana, who was the highest military official in the Shah’s army for many years.
