It happens when aging causes damage to the macula — the part of the eye that controls sharp, straight-ahead vision. Macular degeneration is generally caused by abnormal blood vessels that leak fluid or blood into the macula (MAK-u-luh). The macula is in the part of the retina responsible for central vision. Many of The genes that cause Macular degeneration have been sequenced and we can even test to see if you inherited those genes, meaning that macular degeneration is indeed an inherited condition.

I was diagnosed with wet type macular degeneration when I was 18. I am now 22 years old and there is no problem with my vision yet, but my biggest dream was to become a police officer and that is why I can't. It is ridiculous that there is really no solution for this disease. We are in 2025, even the blind can see again, but there is still no treatment that will cure us.

Several studies purport to show that saffron extract can help delay progression of mild to moderate AMD.

This was the most understandable explanation of MD, especially wet vs. dry. In the list of who is more prone to getting MD you left out being female; it is my understanding that women are more prone to it.

I’m only 51 and was diagnosed yesterday. My plan is to hire a dietitian, very upgraded lenses, and I’m researching stem cells. It sucks, but I’m not going to go the traditional route.

Living with wet amd and glaucoma. 3 different eye drops twice a day both eyes for glaucoma and injections in both eyes for amd. About 10 years of drops and about 6 years of injections. At least I finally have just now advanced to injections every 12 weeks. Legally blind at 67 years old due to field of vision loss at less than 20%. I’d love to see the day when the injections are replaced with eye drops. I’ve also had a severe retina tear and hemorrhage losing total vision in one eye before all of this has happened resulting in emergency surgery to repair it with vision regained afterwords, and then cataracts in both eyes. Thanks for helping to inform people of macula degeneration.

Thank you for this video! I had eye exams every year and was diagnosed with MD when I decided to have cataract surgery at 74 years old. Little did I know that the cataracts were the lesser of 2 problems. Then the 1st cataract surgery left me basically blind in one eye for 6 months because I immediately developed a secondary cataract. Laser surgery finally corrected the secondary cataract and I had the other cataract removed but now I need to wear glasses (stigmatism) to see anything well, and I need bifocals to read which I never needed before. I still see well except when looking from a lighted area into an area with low light, which is kind of scary. When I'm driving I see the road clearly but can't see the needles on the speedometer, fuel or temperature gauges.

I woke up , age 73 , blind in my left eye . Blood had gotten behind the retina and blocked all light . I started injections at 4 week intervals , before the third injection my retina detached and tore .
I received emergency surgery , 3 months later the retina detached again . Scar tissue from the laser welding was pulling on the retina . I declined the Vitrectomy because i already knew vision in that eye was skewed . 12 months later the retina is self re-attaching . Vision in that eye is still skewed , but it is getting closer to what the right eye is seeing . The right eye has also got wet AMD .
I received shots in that eye monthly for 3 1/2 years . Now that has stopped , perhaps for ever . Both of my eyes were rated at 20/10 , the left became 20/200 , the right 20/30 . I was getting my eyes checked on two year intervals , i recommend to my family and friends , annual checks are the best thing you can do for your self .

I was just diagnosed with dry AMD. The year before no AMD. I was quite stunned. Right now my vision is fine. I used to take my aunt for injections for her wet AMD.

Thank you so much for this video. Im use to hearing all the long words you use as ive researched so much after being diognosed with Degeneration Macular. Im 67 and do a lot of crafts. Put it down to age when i couldnt thread a needle. Iv worn glasses for years. A magnifying glass didnt help. We see opticion yearly and last year offerd the OTC scan they now have. Definate yes to this. Im pleassed i did as im at an advance stage in one eye ( right one ) plus small cateract. . My (left ) eye small cateracts and stigma .. So its cruel the my , onde, good eye ( right) should have such a condition. Im now under the hospital and given 6 months to re test with them and a review. But i have been told to really think long and hard to have op to peal away the ....... whatever it is...... so that it doesnt continue to tare itself as it is now. I know % is low for this to help vision. They will take away the cateract in ( right ) eye at same time... But leave the cateract alone in eye not affected (left) . Its very small .

Huge thing to think about for me. Health has not been kind. Leg amputation in 2019. covid 3 weeeks later. (yes Covid was around in jan 2020 and have had it 3 times all togther ) MY Heart and lungs now scard and we are in 2024 and still no sighns of my tast or smell returning. I was so fit befor all this. Never smoked. Lost my parents when i was in my 20s so no idea if inhereted the eye condition. The thought of relying on others to push me around in my wheelchair does not apeel to me. Ive lost so much of myindipendance already.. But my eye sight is deteriating in my (right eye) mostly blured. Using drops as dry. And yes i use the spot grid every day. I have bends both right and left when i look through right eye. Only 2 months for nxt appointment and already on waiting list for op. I can opt out and continue monitoring . My dad use to say " if it aint broke ... dont fix it... " ummmm yep big choice to make..... Sorry rambled. but thought it may be of use to othere.... Get those eyes checked regulaly. I was surprised nothing has been said to avoid vegetable/ seed oils being the cause of AMD. dr. Chris knobbe explains why.
