6.5x14 Ludwig Supraphonic Snare Drum Tuning & Demo

Here’s a brief video on how I typically tune snare drums. I tune completely by ear and haven’t used a drum dial or tune bot. I’m sure they work great for some people but I prefer to just use my ears. That’s worked well for me for the past 30 years.

I started playing acoustic drums and B20 alloy cymbals in 1969. That is the first snare drum I bought with my paper route money and is still the best sounding snare drum for the price and I have so many DW, Tama, Yamaha, and other drums and I never dampen them

Now finally someone knows how to make my snare sing

There’s nothing like 6 1/2 x 14 Supra
Absolute awesomeness 😊

Terrific demonstration. That’s pretty much the sound in my head when I think Supraphonic. Been threatening to buy one for years. Vids like this get my wallet very nervous.

Digging the channel. Cheers. 🍻

Beautiful snare and great tuning!

Makes me wanna cry a bit for swapping my 70s 14x5 Supra, that came with my 1973 Sonor Champion kit I bought second hand in 1981, for a pair of cymbals somewhere in the early 90s. The Sonor kit came with its original 14x5 D454 ferro manganese snare (aka the German Supra), and I already owned a 70s Premier 2000 14x5 and a 1979 Slingerland 14x6.5 back then. So I had plenty of snares and could use some cymbals and thought, why the hell not? But man... what was I thinking?! Haha, I still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night night screaming NOOOOOO!!! The cymbals are long gone, can't remember what happened to them... but at least I still got the Sonor, Premier and Slingerland snares and the Sonor kit too. And I bought a beautiful brand new 14x6.5 Supra with tube lugs in 2022, which has been my workhorse ever since.

Anyway, some nice In My Time Of Dying and The Crunge quotes thrown in there, mister Vintage Drummer.

From Europe, cheers!

Sweet! I had one identical to that which came with my late ' 70s Clear Vistalite kit. It was the "Smoke and Fire" version with the larger sizes 24 14 15 18 and I added another 16 FT later. Informative video with great results. To me, it had something of an Alex Van Halen sound when you first started playing it. Sounded on the money when you were done. "The Crunge" on the rideout . Nice! Thanks Ryan! 👍🙏🥁
