Kenneth Copeland is worth an estimated $750 million, and the IRS still treats his ministry as a church. This is how a collection plate became a business.
The old local church had a pastor who answered to an elected board and faced his congregation every Sunday. Television took that away. By 1986, Jim Bakker's PTL network was bringing in more than $100 million a year, much of it from $1,000 “lifetime partnerships” at Heritage USA, a 2,300-acre Christian resort in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Bakker told viewers he would cap Heritage Grand Hotel partnerships at 25,000. Federal court records show he sold 66,683.
Kenneth Copeland took the same broadcast model and removed the receipt. No hotel and no specific promise, only seed faith and the Word of Faith teaching that giving to the ministry brings a return. The lakefront home is a tax-exempt parsonage. The private jets are ministry assets. All of it sits inside a tax exemption written for community churches.
On this episode of Cost & Consequence, we follow the money from the small-town church to the prosperity gospel: the rise of televangelism, the PTL scandal and Bakker's fraud conviction, Heritage USA, the parsonage allowance, and the viewers who sent money they didn't have.
In this episode: Kenneth Copeland, Kenneth Copeland Ministries, Jim Bakker, Tammy Faye Bakker, PTL Club, Heritage USA, Heritage Grand Hotel, lifetime partnerships, The Charlotte Observer, prosperity gospel, Word of Faith, seed faith, televangelism, megachurches, Joel Osteen, Lakewood Church, Creflo Dollar, Trinity Foundation, parsonage allowance, church tax exemption, IRS
