There is so much suffering in the world. Earthquakes and disease are examples of natural evil; murder and torture are examples of moral evil. Centuries ago, Epicurus asked, "How can an all-powerful, good god tolerate evil? If God cannot stop evil, he is not omnipotent. On the other hand, if God is omnipotent but unwilling to prevent evil, then how can God be all-good? If everything comes from God, evil must also come from Him. Therefore, God must have willed evil." This question has endured for centuries and has found its place in atheist literature as one of the most powerful arguments against theism. Sam Harris, a contemporary thinker, asks almost the same question as Epicurus in his book Letter to a Christian Nation when he says, "If God exists, either He does nothing to prevent the most terrible calamities, or He doesn't care to stop them. Therefore, God is either impotent or evil." If the god of theism is an all-powerful, good god, why doesn't He put an end to all this evil? Let's try to answer this question with the medieval philosophers Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Boetheius.
