today i’m sharing some controversial / non-traditional things that i did for my small wedding / civil ceremony / courthouse wedding at san francisco city hall. in my opinion, weddings do not have to be big, expensive, traditional, or follow any societal expectations to feel special. so these are things that my husband and i did and agreed on as a team to still make our micro wedding perfect for the both of us. if you’re also planning a small wedding or are also trying to be a DIY bride on a budget, but are afraid of what people may think, i hope this gives you some encouragement! 🤍

I waited for nearly 8 years before getting proposed to (we got married 3 months later). I think that's just what happens if you're in a relationship when you're young/still in school.
I also did a city hall wedding with lunch at a nearby restaurant. We wanted to go to SF City Hall, but obviously did not make the deadline for our very specific "auspicious" date.
It was just our immediate family and my cousin as the photographer. We didn't do a reception and used COVID as an excuse so that we wouldn't have to deal with any drama.
My engagement ring was custom, but the wedding bands were about $100 off of Etsy. My husband and I agreed that we could just upgrade later if we really wanted to.
We also just wore stuff we had in the closet. I wish I had found a more flattering dress because I looked like a plastic bag floating in the wind~ but I still look really happy so it doesn't matter.
My brother INSISTED on me getting my nails done and paying for the bouquet (probably the most expensive part of the ceremony). Definitely made up for those college summers when he would drive us to his favorite restaurant and he would make me pay for his meal with my measly intern salary.
I will say though, I think you are overlooking some of the major benefits of in-person shopping; you can make sure everything fits you properly, and make sure the product/materials are actually what you want or expect, because a lot of online websites (especially cheaper ones) can be dodgy and you might not realise until it's too late. so many times I have bought something online only to realise the size is off, or it doesn't fit part of my body well, the colours are different, the material feels too synthetic, the silhoutte is off compared to the images online, etc.
personally I would actually find it easier to figure out what I like by browsing online, then go in-person to make sure I get what I want. I'm glad that it worked out for you, but it might not always, so it's something people should watch out for! also lowkey that table runner as a wedding scarf idea was genuis, it looks so good
I love that you spent your time and effort on the things you valued,not because you felt it made you better than anyone else but because it was what you wanted.
I had a few unconventional things through my wedding journey as well as some “basic” things and I regret nothing ❤
