When i was a little child, around 1977, i lived at the top of south street with my grandparents, auntie, uncles and mom. When i lived there i was looking out of the lounge window, where you could see all the way down the hill, waiting for my grandad to come home fron work, he worked on the quay. I saw a man in a hat, with a cape, dressed in black, with dark features, walk passed the window. He frightened me so I ran into my nan who was in the kitchen and told her what I'd seen. She told me not to worry, probably someone in fancy dress. Roll on 20 years and I'm chatting to my nan about that day, she looked at me and said, "you saw matthew hopkins".

You got me through my washing up, drying up and putting away, thanks Shane. Did Matthew Hopkins in school history more years ago than I  care to remember thankyou for refreshing my memory

I love your videos Shane.  Totally addictive!!  Your sense of humour is such a tonic.  Never change them and keep us hooked with your laughter 😅😅

I'm pretty sure the witchcraft act didn't get removed from uk law till the 2nd world war. There was a case of a known psychic (not so known that i can remember her name offhand) who that witchcraft act was used against due to her being pretty on the money with certain knowledge that was kinda top secret. I think they tried to pin her as a spy at first, and when there was no evidence of that, they used the witchcraft act to silence her. I think (again, my memory is hazy) that it was Winston Churchill himself that eventually got the charge of witchcraft against her overturned

Wow! You're right! The image of Hopkins is Vincent price! But your pics make him look like Johnny Depp! Very interesting  video... so informative! Thanks for sharing this very important part of this country's history. God bless all those poor souls.

I’ve been waiting to get off of work to listen to this all day! 🥳

Shane! There is another possible resting place for MH. I grew up down the road from M'tree in Ipswich and I was told he was buried in the dead of night at a church that no longer stands, although the foundations of the tower are still visible. Travel south from the B1352 (Harwich Rd) down Heath Rd. It takes a sharp left. On that corner - and in that field - was a church. That field is where he is reputed to lie. Loved the video.

My Dad was from Manningtree and Mistly, my dad and his mates always said that the old wooden bus stop on the wall near the cross road that leads up to lawford. I was also told a story of someone who was driving at the cross roads when a woman dressed in flowing white and a scared face ran out in front of him

James the first is early 17th c. Following the death of Elizabeth the first in 1603

My parents lived in Lavenham and that was also one of Matthew Hopkins stopping grounds. Probably residing in hell now.  He was a nasty man and his influence was also letting nasty men get away with mass murder because that’s what it was.

Serial killers are young sometimes. Youth doesn't stop people from doing evil.

Used to drink in the Red Lion a lot it was defo spooky but I never saw anything, Thanks for the video of the lion, brings back many memories.

Really good. Fascinating! and have learnt a lot too. Would have thought Matthew Hopkins would have had a grander house considering the money he was accumalating.

In the period you are refering to, travelling judges were the norm. Not just for witch trials. You would be kept in the local lock up until the judge came around on route and your trial would be held. He'd be off to the next village and not wait for sentence to be carried out. He was on a schedule.

Ty this was interesting and i was stunned that hopkins was only in his twentys to me that means he was still learning about life and certainly shouldnt have been given the right to decide what a witch is or how he reached those decissions with callous acts...again thanks ❤

You never disappoint Shane, that was so good. I lived nearby in the 70’s and Manningtree looks very different now (very spruced up) to how it was. Lovely to see it again. I really like how you go back as far as you can and your critical/sceptical thinking kicks in. That is what struck me right from beginning. 🎉🎉

Loved this!
I’ve never heard any of these stories about Matthew Hopkins!!
I always thought like everyone else that he was old when he died

Hi Shane, I think that it's great that you're adding history to the stories in your videos. As you have described with this  one , the historical side of the people mentioned was very important and relevent to what happened to them. It also adds to the veracity  of the story/stories.

Watching in the mountains of Lourdes so hope not too scary

I love Tuesdays and Fridays ❤. Great stuff Shane 😊
