Meaning of the lyrics:
“What do you see with the eyes in your head?
Pitiful struggle, or are you content?”
(Are you seeing what’s happening around you? Are you paying attention to the struggle or are you ignoring it?)
“Fear and anger so garishly clothed, resignation and ignorance tied up in bows”
(Picture fear and anger all around you as a scary, ominous figure [garishly clothed]. And people either resigned to the situation or completely ignoring it)
“A king to a pauper, a sad wizened clown
A joke an' a punchline, people all 'round”
(We started off great but now we’re all screwed, left looking like sad clowns - what a joke we all are!)
“Rose-tinted glasses and no-one is sane”
(So now we pretend everything’s OK, like we’ve gone mad)
“A big waltzing blindfold, we are what we play
We are what we play, and nothing is sane”
(It’s like we’re dancing around blind to the situation - our actions define who we are…it’s madness!)
“What can he hear with his ears in his hands?”
(“He” is mankind. Mankind is covering up his ears and choosing not to listen)
“Her silently weeping, his head in the sand
Patiently lurking in water in wine, he'll drown by her tears, or choke on his time”
(“Her” is Mother Earth. She’s crying over what we’re doing to her while we’ve got our heads buried in the sand. It’s like we’re drunk, waiting to either to be drowned by Earth’s tears or destroy ourselves in our own time before she’s destroyed)
“For what we've forsaken and taken too soon
Before murdering old mother, we'd dance on the moon
Deaf to the thunder that silently cracks, we're holding our breath until her collapse”
(We’ve raped and pillaged Earth before killing her. “Dance on the moon” - the Latin for moon is “Luna”, it’s where the word lunatic comes from. We’re dancing like lunatics. And we’re not listening to the warnings but holding our breaths for what’s going to happen - like an act of self harm)
“What do you feel with your heart in your chest?
Some few thousand years, could soon come to rest”
(We’ve been on this earth only a few thousand years and even if we’re choosing to not look and listen, we know in our hearts that our actions will bring it to an end)
“Do you feel the butcher? The bullet that bores
With corkscrewing chaos and mighty a roar”
(The butcher is war. Bullets and artillery corckscrew when they fly through the air. Can you feel it and hear the roar of war?)
“On the shoulders of man and his bag full of bombs
Bell tolling destruction our final swan song”
(It’s on us and our warring ways that the final bells, marking our end will ring, telling us our time is up. The sound of those bells being our final swan song)
“The final musical piece at the end symbolizes our final swan song before it’s all over.”
