Everybody involved in this movie deserves an Oscar. It's cruel and tough to watch but otherwise a beautiful movie as far as the whole production.

Edward Norton's acting in this just blew me away. After he curb stomped that poor guy, when he turned around the look on his face was pride, the look in his eye was pure unadulterated hate.

One of the greatest, most influential films ever made. Unfortunately, it still hasn't reached the level of notoriety it should have.

Seriously everyone in this film gave 110%. Shout out to Edward Furlong. I know when most people think of this, they think of Edward Norton (who did an amazing job) but Edward Furlong captured Danny's conflicting emotions and inner turmoil, holding on to that shred of innocence from when Danny was younger, so perfectly.

They don’t make movies with this much feeling/passion/emotions anymore. This movie has the power to make people cry, smile, get scared, horrified, shocked, relieved and happy. Miss this era of films.

This is actually loosely based on the life of Frank Meeink, a skinhead that went to prison for 3 years for kidnapping and murder because he was a juvenile. His views did change in prison partially because of his friendship with a black inmate and he left the neo-nazi group he helped for when he was released. He moved back into his old neighbourhood and started helping with at risk youth through hockey and gave lectures on his own life and how to avoid a life of violence and crime and the dangers of radical hate coming from certain news outlets.

This is the movie that cemented Edward Norton as one of my favorite actors. He can convey so much even without any lines. Like the curb-stomp scene when he turns around and you can read his face and immediately sense the pride he feels despite him not uttering a word. He’s incredible at what he does. It can’t be easy to portray a character like this, but he did it so well.

Edward Norton deserved an academy award for this performance 💯

The use of color here is worth noting. When Derek had hate in his heart, the scene's were in black and white, much like the way he saw the world. As he began to open his mind, the world was filled with the full range of color. The final scene, of the sunset, is shown losing its color. It is black and white, grey and red. I wonder what Derek's mindset is after the murder of his brother? Does he revert to hate, or will the realization that hate leads to suffering keep him from going down that path again?

This is what happens when people with unbridled hate and misdirected rage don’t have anyone to guide them. It’s what happens when you don’t have enough people in your life to point you in the right direction and get to the bottom of it. It’s a tragic part of humanity. Such a good film. I’m glad you got the hace to watch it.

Have to say the way Edward Norton chooses films and subject matter and his brilliant execution might be responsible for half of my civics education as a young adult.

@alexcarranza15 4 years ago

I remember watching this at a younger age and always thought his prison friend didn't want to tell him why he was there. But as an adult, that scenario is likely and really frustrating as an adult. Even the acting was on point that Derek was in disbelief but in reality it was true for him 🥴

@shannonbrigante5764 4 years ago

Fun fact.. the director of this film.. after submitting the first cut, was given pages of notes & questions & editing suggestions.. dude BUGGED out & quit.. Ed Norton edited it himself.. in the original ending after Danny is killed it shows Derek taking off his shirt, revealing the tattoo again & shaving his head.. meaning Derek turns back to what he knows.. Norton was not ok w it.. he won

@adrianramirez4884 4 years ago

The choice to make all the memories black and white to symbolize how Derek saw the world as just blacks and whites then all the shots after his time being in color is just chefs kiss

This is one of those movies that is hard to watch, but everyone needs to see it.

Six years for a “assault on an officer” yes absolutely, my stepdad was a former army Vietnam veteran and police officer here in Florida. Sending love to you and yours from Orlando Florida

Black guys who grows up around gangs should also watch this movie. The face of that black kid after he realized what he did... man. There's two tragic parts of this story.

@deeanna8448 4 years ago

Edward Norton's first big role was a couple of years before this. It was a film called "Primal Fear". You should watch it. His acting was stellar.

Edward Furlong was not 14 when the movie was made. He was as 21.🤣🤣🤣 One of my favorite movies. True lump-in-the-throat stuff. One thing that movie did for me was to help me understand why some folks might be racists and that it's possible for them to change. I knew that if I was, ironically, "hating" any racist person who has the potential for good in the future, I'm no better. It perpetuates the cycle.

One of the messed up things I never see anybody mention is the stark difference in sentencing between Derek and his prison buddy. His friend, at worst, assaulted an officer and got 6 years in prison. Derek murdered two people, in ways that go beyond simple castle doctrine stuff, and gets like 3. That's crazy.
