First Light Optics reached out to me and asked if I fancied playing around with the Celestron Origin.... Do I want to play with a 6" RASA on a smart mount? Yes.

I've had the Celestron Origin for about 6 months now and have used it several times. In this video we go from the beginning - the huge box, imaging with it, and then my final thoughts on this Intelligent Home Observatory Telescope.

Fancy buying the Origin and helping support the channel?:

How do you find this newer review style? With some real time usage and then some final thoughts at the end? Hope you enjoyed the video! Clear skies!

There's not a single astrophotographer that hasn't uttered that same giggle of excitement when Orion appears in all its glory when the first subs come through.
The Origin looks like fun, but I don't see how anyone would choose this over a SeeStar or Dwarf? (if we ignore the differences in Focal Length) I would imagine that people who are willing to spend that amount of money on an imaging rig in a home-observatory situation, would rather set it up themselves. Those halos at Pleiades would have been unacceptable to me for that price-tag and what the scope is advertised to be.
I think your review of it was excellent though, I enjoyed this. Was very interesting and I liked the format.

Quality video . I was thinking expensive but overall what a quality scope . Eyes nearly popped out of my head after seeing the results from your session. Bonkers 😂

Great review, fully agree about the motor noise that's shocking, my GTI mount makes less noise and I thought that was loud. Like the review style and loved your reaction to the Orion Nebula. Great to see you back Russ

It sounds exactly like my 2004 Nexstar C11.

I'm a Celestron SCT w/ Hyperstar nut. 6", 8", 11" are all on mounts outside. I plan on selling them all and getting the Origin in a few years when I'm too old to deal with these. 😄

As an owner of the original Evolution scope, I'm disappointed that 10+ years later the noise has not been improved. I've been limited to where and when I use my scope for the reasons you outlined, noisy enough to heard by those indoors. Impressed by the speed of image capture on the RASA though.

An interesting product and a great presentation/review. I can see it is usage is more toward outreach/less geeky peeps that don't want to nerd out with their setups etc. The lack of PC connectivity is a weird choice, especially with janky WIFI and slow USB drive read/write. I'm guessing the camera is "integrated" and not swapable? A RASA 6 is around £2K, so you could stick this on a cheapo Strainwave mount and simply use NINA or OnStep and still have some cash for filters, EAF, but this would give you considerably more control. I suspect that Celestron know that this is not for peeps like me or thee and I suspect that this will probably do well, once they resolved software and other issues.
Cheers for putting this out there mate!

Thanks a lot for this excellent review. The review format, including real time usage and final thoughts, is perfect. That said, this product really puzzles me. Basically, you pay a truckload of money, unbox it, move it to the backyard, open an app on your phone, get heavily edited and AI augmented images of the selected targets, and then store it in your small living room. Where's the fun? If I can't really interact with the hardware in any meaningful way, I'd also prefer skipping the unboxing, skipping moving the thing to the backyard, and skipping the storing in my small living room. That money is about 200 hours renting a remote telescope of much better quality under a very dark sky - with a much better camera and a full filter wheel. Perhaps, if it was 10 times cheaper and 10 times smaller... oh wait, that would be a dwarf, seestar, hestia, etc.

I have two fellow club members that have Origins. They like theirs but I prefer my 8" Celestron HD with Hyperstar as it give superior images plus is much more versatile as it can be used as a visual scope, at f10, with a .7 focal reducer, Hyperstar or going the other way with barlows for higher mangifications. I use on either a ZWO AM5 mount or my Astro Physics 11" which normally is used with much my much larger/heavier scopes. The AM5 is the ideal match for the 8" Hyperstar as it is easily transported, sets up in must a couple of minutes and works GREAT. One thing to consider on all these all in one smart scopes is that you have all your eggs in one basket. If one component goes bad you have a door stop. Upgrades are available.... you have to sell what you have and get a new latest version. I do like Celestron scopes and the company but I think while this is impressive and an easy but expensive way to get nito a nice scope.
Frankly I think a better option and cheaper is one of the ZWO S series scopes. I see a lot of images with them that are very impressive. You just need to learn how to improve the images that come straight out of the scope with additional processing.
