The Torah doesn't begin with Aleph, the first letter of the alphabet.

It begins with Bet, the second.

And in that choice of the Creator lies a lesson that can change how you view your past.

In this video, we begin the Book of Genesis with the parashah of Bereshit, and I'll give you four tips with immense ethical value. First, the letter Bet: closed above, behind, and below, open only to the front. Your past doesn't matter; what you can't explain doesn't matter: what matters is your present and walking forward, toward the Torah. Second, the mystery of the second day: it's the only day of creation where the Creator doesn't say "that it is good." Why? Because on that day He used the verb "to divide," and dividing can never be good: the Creator adds, builds, and unites. Third, "Let us make man": if God is one and unique, whom does He ask? The midrashim teach us the lesson of humility: the greatest asks the smallest. And fourth, Shabbat as creation: the Creator didn't simply stop, He created rest. Saying "stop" to stress, to the phone, and to emails, to be present with your loved ones, and to enter the week with boundless strength. Four crumbs of bread in the vastness of what the Torah offers.
