“Spain doesn’t exist,” “Spaniards are stupid,” and “we need to start a global bullying campaign.”

These were some of the outrageous things uttered by certain Argentine streamers, pundits, and fans before the World Cup final. They celebrated before the game, belittled our athletes, and used history to attack an entire country.

In this video, I respond with facts, history, and a touch of irony.

Did Spain not exist in the world of sports before 2010? We’ll talk about our world and Olympic champions: Rafa Nadal, Miguel Induráin, Ángel Nieto, Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Miriam Blasco, and many other legends. We’ll also remember the World Championships won by Spain in futsal, basketball, handball, water polo, and roller hockey.

We will also debunk two other myths: that Argentina gave away tons of food to Spain for free during the post-war period and that the entire history of Spanish America can be summarized by saying that “Spain went there to steal.”

Argentina did provide significant assistance to Spain, and that deserves our recognition. But those supplies were part of trade agreements, credits, loans, and exchanges between the two countries. There was debt, interest, and payment obligations.

This video is not against Argentina or Argentinians. More than 450,000 people born in Argentina live in Spain, and the vast majority are hardworking and perfectly integrated. My response is directed solely at those who confuse sporting rivalry with fanaticism, passion with contempt, and freedom of expression with insulting an entire people.

Social media increasingly rewards the provocateur, the fanatic, and those who utter the most outrageous nonsense. Where is this model leading us?

They called us fools, said Spain didn't exist, and celebrated before the game even started.

Spain responded on the field.

Who's laughing now?
