I said the men ate twenty thousand tons of grain per day. It’s twenty thousand pounds. Obviously they weren’t eating a ton of grain per person. Sorry about that.

As cool as the entire Bayeux Tapestry is, my favorite thing is that among the things depicted is Halley's Comet.

A point about the skewers: a metal skewer conducts heat into the middle of the bird. One can cook a bird thoroughly by simply elevating it enough above the fire that it cooks through without burning, but the skewer lets you get it a bit closer, so it cooks faster. Kitchen gadgets of the Medieval era.

Having done a fair bit of hand embroidery, I struggle to convey what a truly monumentous amount of work embroidering the Bayeux tapestry would have been. Absolutely incredible

If you can't get to see the Bayeux Tapestry whilst it's on show in the UK, there is a replica at Reading Museum that was hand sewn by local embroiderers. And with free entry

I simply love the idea that one day there will be a novel about the Norman Conquest which will feature unreasonably detailed scenes of period meals being cooked and eaten.

I love all the weird politics of Norman and Angevin England, but I always feel so sorry for the everyday folk - it seems like they were constantly being pillaged, conscripted, and overtaxed, all so that a roomful of powerful families could play footy with the throne(s) 😅

"Odo, the bishop, encourages the boys with his staff". Odo is one of my favourite historical figures. Wound up getting sent to prison, and got out by volunteering for the First Crusade at the tender young age of 70 (ish) and dying on the way. Absolute madman.
