There's never been a band like this, and there never will be again. Imagine being in the audience at the Half Note that night. Or even hearing it on the radio.

what impress me the most about coltrane besides the music is how he is constantly willing to learn from people younger than him, albert ayler john gilmore ornette coleman eric dolphy and so many more, he has no ego he just wants to play music

I feel like for Coltrane who practiced all day everyday taking what to others seems a long time to build up his solo was just a kind of meditation. If you are patient listening then this doesn't feel so abstract. It's expressive on a raw emotional level.

Holy f*** s*** can’t even imagine what the intensity in that club would of felt like

Trane's music is spiritual. It is beyond scales, modes and chords. He is one of these rare humans who was able to connect with the spirit within.

Very abstract but still listenable, the fact Elvington Jones is still swinging gives the listener something to hold on to.

LISTENING TO A HIGHLY CREATIVE GROUP OF HIGHLY DEVELOPED MUSICIANS SHARE WITH A VERY SYMPATHETIC PUBLIC THEE REVELATIONS OF A DETERMINED SEEKER OF SAINTHOOD IN THEE PRESENCE OF JOHN COLTRANE... QUITE A FEAT IN THIS CONFUSED SOCIETY WE LIVE IN!

Not only did this change what was possible to express musically, it was the pinnacle of human expression for the 20th century. No artist ever communed and evoked so much with the unknown yet fully formed artistic possibilities as John and this band. The bar is set so high as to likely no be surpassed in our lifetime.

Ah, the Half Note - my favorite place to hear Trane. All this great music and a delicious meatball parmigiana sandwich for $3.50...

Damn, there's a tension bubbling under this swing! We are listening to the changing of a musical form here....Wow...

In Miles' autobio he talks about Coltrane in the period of '66-'67; Trane would come to his place in the city once in a while and they'd jam in the basement. According to Miles, John did feel that his earlier playing/approach was probably "better" but he couldn't stop and go back. Miles understood---"he was on a journey," was how he put it. He also said he was "very proud" of Coltrane for playing the be-ins of the '60s, trying to unite people with the music.

The transitional period in 1965 is my favorite period and produced three masterpieces: Transition, Sun Ship, and First Meditations (For Quartet). The music can barely contain all the energy. Thanks for posting.

You are promoting this music better than all the music companies.

I do not like the marketing of jazz as Starbucks music. Those channels are making some people rich.

Why were people against philly Joe Jones playing? I always thought hee was the best drummer.

Tiny side note. In the 1980s, a cousin of mine lived in the loft upstairs of the Half Note. I relive often, especially when listening to this and the many other recordings made from there, the evening he took me downstairs into the old club (no longer functioning). Talk about spine tingling fire going through my entire body! I implored Danny to take the sign from the building, give it perhaps to the Institute for Jazz Studies. He moved from there a few years later and sadly neglected to snatch the sign. I think the building was either demolished or renovated into a condominium not long thereafter.
