MRT Jakarta Phase 2A
1. Historical Activity (Project History & Development)
Beginnings: The construction of MRT Jakarta Phase 2A is a continuation of the MRT North–South Line Phase 1 (Lebak Bulus–HIBundaran), which has been operational since March 2019.
Contract Signing: The CP 201 package was officially signed in February 2020 as the first package in Phase 2A, which began physical construction in the central area of the capital.
Construction Progress:
CP 201 (Thamrin Station & Monas Station): As of mid-2026, the physical progress of CP 201 had reached 93.5%–94.2%. The main work is currently entering the architectural finishing stage, installing Mechanical, Electrical, & Plumbing (MEP) systems, ceilings, escalator installation, and roadway reinstatement.
Extended Concourse Bundaran HI: This underground concourse project, located directly beneath the Bundaran HI Transjakarta bus stop and above the active MRT rail platform, is underway under construction by MRT Jakarta subsidiary PT ITJ. As of mid-2026, physical progress has reached 21.4%–24%.
2. Construction Purpose
CP 201 (Thamrin–Monas): Expanding the reach of the integrated mass transit network to business districts, government offices, and national cultural heritage sites, reducing traffic congestion in the Thamrin–Monas corridor, and reducing carbon emissions in Jakarta.
Extended Concourse at Bundaran HI:
Designed as a 4,439 m² commercial space and interchange hub located 18 meters underground.
This aims to anticipate a surge in ridership at Bundaran HI Station from 11,000 to 17,000 people per day when Phase 2A is operational.
This will increase passenger safety, prevent congestion on the platforms, and provide direct connections to surrounding buildings (Plaza Indonesia, Grand Hyatt, Wisma Nusantara, and Pullman Hotel) without the need to cross the street.
3. Budgetary
MRT Jakarta Phase 2A (Overall): Cost approximately IDR 25.3 trillion. Construction is funded through an official loan scheme between the Indonesian and Japanese governments via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Extended Concourse at Bundaran HI: Cost approximately IDR 200 billion. This project is unique in that it does not use the Jakarta Regional Budget (APBD) or MRT Jakarta operational funds, but instead utilizes a Building Floor Coefficient (KLB) compensation scheme from the private sector/developer.
4. Project Responsibility & Rolled Out By (Person in Charge & Implementer)
Executing Agency (Central/Regional Government): Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia (Directorate General of Railways) together with the Jakarta Provincial Government.
Project Owner/Developer: PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda).
Extended Concourse Developer: PT Integrasi Transit Jakarta (ITJ) (a subsidiary of PT MRT Jakarta).
Main Contractor (CP 201): SAJV Consortium (Shimizu Corporation – PT Adhi Karya (Persero) Tbk Joint Venture).
5. Target Timeline (Completion Target)
CP 201 (Thamrin & Monas Station): Targeted for full completion by late 2026/early 2027 and operational by the end of 2027 (as part of Segment 1 of the Bundaran HI–Harmoni route).
Extended Concourse Bundaran HI: Targeted for completion by May 2027 and inaugurated in June 2027, coinciding with Jakarta's 500th anniversary.
6. Obstacles & Challenges
Ground Conditions: The soft soil characteristics of downtown Jakarta require rigorous precision in underground excavation techniques.
Construction Over Active Tracks (Extended Concourse): Underground construction is being carried out directly above the MRT rail tracks, which are in full operation every day, requiring high safety and occupational health and safety standards to avoid disrupting train operations.
Heavy Traffic & Utilities Management: The M.H. Thamrin to Medan Merdeka Barat corridor is a major protocol area with a dense network of pipes, underground utility cables, and complex traffic management.
Cultural Heritage Preservation: Management of historical sites and cultural heritage along the Monas and Thamrin areas requires special management processes.
