A murdered man's hidden tape records his final minutes. Texas Rangers use the audio, early DNA and tireless legwork to crack three chilling Texas cases.

Case 1: On July 27, 1982, an abandoned, torched car in a drainage ditch near Santa Rosa leads Rangers to the disappearance of Billy Staton and Letty Castro. A rock on the accelerator, painted-over blood under carpet, and an empty rock indentation outside point to Paul Wolf, husband of Staton's ex-wife, Sherry. Wolf first claims self-defense, but the bodies tell a different story. Billy is found with a mini tape recorder strapped under his shirt; the FBI advises keeping the cassette wet to save it. On playback, Sherry and her daughter are clearly heard, refuting claims they were absent, and the attack unfolds moment by moment. Blood spatter tails corroborate the audio, placing Billy seated when the metal bar strike lands. With Glenn Henderson hiding as an accomplice and a gunshot ending Letty's life, premeditation is proven. Paul and Sherry Wolf receive life sentences; Henderson gets life as well.

Case 2: In 1988, 72-year-old Lydia Schumacher is found raped and murdered in her Burleson County farmhouse. Polygraphs clear three early suspects, but ABO blood typing leaves Charles Supac Jr. as an inclusion, not proof. The case stalls until PCR DNA arrives in 1991. Preserved bedsheets yield a profile that matches Supac. Combined with a neighbor's eerie account of Supac returning near the property and cut phone lines, the DNA breaks the case. Supac confesses and is convicted.

Case 3: In 1994, a body dumped off I-35 near the Oklahoma line is identified as James Sykes. A sock in the mouth and a shoelace ligature echo another Texas homicide. Leads from friend Murray Bracken point to trucker Terry Brown and his girlfriend, Tina Sampson. A stolen rig, a discarded blood-soaked mattress, and DNA with 1 in 5.5 billion odds tie Sykes to Brown's truck. The pair admit to the killing; Brown gets life, Sampson 20 years for conspiracy.

Across decades, The New Detectives shows how audio evidence, blood spatter analysis, and breakthrough PCR DNA let the Texas Rangers turn scarce clues into airtight cases.
