High in the remote Himalayas of northwestern Nepal lies Limi Valley, where an unusual family system known as fraternal polyandry has existed for generations and is still being practiced. In some families, several brothers may share one wife and remain together in a single household. “Documented research from Limi Valley reports that in some cases, as many as five brothers shared one wife in a single polyandrous marriage.” This  documentary is based on documented anthropological research, field studies, and evidence from Limi Valley

This documentary explores why this system developed, how such families traditionally organize their homes, land, livestock and inheritance, what happens when a family has only daughters or a single son, and why polyandry is becoming less common today.

Polyandry is not practiced by every family in Limi Valley. It is one of several forms of marriage found in the region. Within communities where it has traditionally been practiced, it has historically functioned as a locally recognized family arrangement and is socially accepted as normal and regular practice.
A study published in 2025 by researcher Ramesh Prasad Adhikary examined polyandry in Limi Valley. Among the 36 households surveyed, 47% were reported as practicing polyandry, with some cases involving several brothers sharing one wife. The study identifies limited cultivable land, preservation of family property, pastoral livelihoods and keeping households economically united among factors associated with the practice. Because the study involved a relatively small sample, these figures should not be interpreted as representing every household in Limi Valley.

Earlier research on Himalayan communities has also documented links between fraternal polyandry, keeping inherited land from being repeatedly divided, pastoralism and the organization of household labor. Research also indicates that marriage patterns have been changing, with monogamous marriage becoming increasingly common.
